Reflecting on 2024: Top 10 Leadership Lessons from Coaching Sessions

The Most Popular Leadership Insights from My 2024 Coaching Posts

As 2024 wraps up, I’ve been looking back at some of the most popular LinkedIn posts I shared throughout the year—anonymous lessons from coaching sessions with senior executives across industries. These posts resonated deeply with many of you, sparking conversations about leadership, growth, and navigating challenges.

Here’s a summary of the top 10 lessons that stood out this year, drawn from real conversations, impactful moments, and the shared wisdom of remarkable leaders I’ve had the privilege to coach:

1. You Are Not as Crucial as You Think You Are

Stepping away can be a powerful lesson in trust and delegation. Leaders often discover that their teams can thrive independently—but strategic initiatives need their vision. Focus your energy where it matters most, and trust your team with the rest.

“True leadership is not about being indispensable; it's about empowering others to thrive without you.”

2. Don’t Settle for Being Liked—Strive to Be Admired

Respect is earned through competence; admiration is cultivated through impact. Leaders who inspire, uplift, and set the standard for excellence move beyond respect to leave a legacy.

“Aim to be the kind of leader people want to emulate, not just the one they want to please.”

3. The Power of the Pause

Silence isn’t a weakness—it’s a tool. Pausing allows for clarity, thoughtful communication, and connection. Leaders who embrace silence often find their words carry more weight.

“In leadership, silence is not empty—it’s where the best ideas take shape.”

4. Redefining Trust

Trust evolves at different levels of leadership. Early on, it’s about camaraderie and support. At senior levels, it shifts to believing in outcomes and the team’s ability to deliver, regardless of personal ties.

“Trust is not just about loyalty—it’s about delivering on promises, together.”

5. Social Skills vs. Performance

Leadership isn’t just about being liked or socializing; it’s about results. Learning to say no to non-essential events and focusing on impactful decisions is a critical leadership skill.

“The most successful leaders prioritize what matters over what’s popular.”

6. Professional Growth Is About Needs, Not Wants

When team members request development opportunities, dig deeper to uncover their true motivations. Effective leaders find creative ways to meet their needs without always granting their exact requests.

“The best leaders don’t just give answers—they uncover the real questions.”

7. Silence Speaks Volumes

Non-verbal communication can amplify—or undermine—your leadership presence. Be mindful of what your body language and expressions convey, even when you’re not speaking.

“You’re always speaking—even when you’re silent.”

8. Ownership Requires Action

Claiming ownership is meaningless without follow-through. True leaders don’t just collect responsibilities—they drive results and inspire their teams to do the same.

“Ownership isn’t a title; it’s what you do with the responsibility you’ve claimed.”

9. Design the Life You Want

Leadership isn’t just about work; it’s about intentional living. Create meaningful experiences for yourself and your family now, rather than waiting for the “right time.”

“Don’t wait to design the life you want—start shaping it today.”

10. Accountability Over Approval

Leaders grow when they focus on coaching and enabling their teams rather than rubber-stamping decisions. Encourage ownership, ask probing questions, and let your team learn from successes and setbacks.

“True accountability starts when leaders empower their teams to own their decisions.”

Looking Ahead to 2025: These lessons reflect not only the wisdom of the leaders I’ve worked with but also the evolving nature of leadership itself. As we enter 2025, let’s commit to continuous improvement, staying "positively anxious," and leading with humility, focus, and intention.

What lessons have shaped your leadership this year? I’d love to hear your reflections as we move forward together.

Happy New Year! I’m reading Boundaries for Leaders by Dr.Henry Cloud. His premise that “Leaders (and organizations) always get what they create and what they allow” resonates with me as I transition into a new organization and team. It both informs current state and provides clarity in moving forward to the desired future. I also find myself thinking through that lens in my personal life now. Great lesson for understanding what has brought us here and the courage to lead/grow forward. Thank you Michel Koopman for your posts and guidance to leaders out there working hard to build healthy organizations.
