Reflection 3 of 10: How IFT Shaped My Growth and Expanded My Network

Leveraging IFT for Career Growth: My Journey of Leadership and Professional Development

I have dedicated over 1,000 hours to the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) in volunteer leadership roles over the past decade. This involvement has been a cornerstone of my career journey, providing me with invaluable opportunities for growth and development. Most importantly, integrating me into a broad professional network in the United States and around the world—an invaluable asset for my entire professional career.

My journey with IFT began with a deep commitment to the field of food science. As I immersed myself in IFT’s vibrant community, I seized various leadership opportunities that significantly shaped my career trajectory. Starting as a volunteer, I took on several key roles that allowed me to gain experience and hone my skills:

Chair of the IFT Product Development Division (PDD) (2022 – 2023): I spent nearly 8 years with the Product Development Division, culminating in this leadership role. I developed and championed the division’s vision and mission, engaging 3,000 members through various initiatives and programs. By establishing collaborations with multiple IFT Divisions, Sections, IFTSA, and over 10 global universities, I expanded our global mentorship program 10-fold and created valuable professional development opportunities for over 100 professionals.

Chair of the IFT Women’s Resource Group (WRG) (2020 – 2022): Leading the launch of IFT’s first resource group focused on gender equality and professional development, I organized impactful sessions on key topics such as “negotiating for your future” and “addressing gender biases.” I was particularly proud of shaping the volunteer leadership into a 50-member strong group during my succession planning. This role allowed me to build strategies for effective member engagement and mentorship. The success of the WRG has paved the way for four additional resource groups, transforming IFT from just a professional organization into a vibrant and supportive community.

President of the South-Eastern Section IFT (2018 – 2019): Leading a 15-member board, I guided the section to achieve the “Section of Excellence” award. My efforts in revamping the regional food ingredient suppliers’ expo led to a 30% increase in net revenue and a 150% boost in member engagement. This role helped me build meaningful connections with professionals across Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama, support students at HBCUs, and leverage my network when I returned to Georgia to join Coca-Cola last year.

These roles provided me with experiences and training that my day job could not offer, allowing me to develop skills in leadership, member engagement, and team management. My involvement with IFT not only complemented my career but also facilitated my professional growth. Most of the programs I helped shape at IFT are still alive and impacting thousands of food science professionals, which always leaves my heart content.

I have worked with hundreds of amazing professionals who have helped shape my skills to the top of the industry, enabling me to excel in my current role and show up in the best possible way.

Here are three key resources from IFT that I highly recommend:

1. IFT Food Technology Magazine: This publication is essential for staying up-to-date with industry trends and innovations. It has been a foundational routine for me, keeping me informed and ahead in my field.

2. IFT Compensation and Career Path Report: The insights from this report were instrumental in my first salary negotiation, helping me achieve a 20% increase in pay. For those new to the field or looking to enter, the latest 2024 IFT Compensation and Career Path Report provides valuable insights:

◦ Food science professionals earn a median salary of $107,300.

◦ 71% of professionals received a median raise of 10% last year.

◦ PhD holders earn a median salary of $141,000, while those with MBAs earn $165,000.

◦ Women earn a median salary of $100,000, which is 6.8% less than their male counterparts. Racial disparities are present but improving.

◦ The average job satisfaction rating is 3.59 out of 5, with higher satisfaction linked to increased pay.

3. IFT Annual Meeting and Expo: Attending the annual meeting has been invaluable for building my network. It’s a great opportunity to connect with peers, put faces to names, and engage with industry leaders.

Unexpected Outcome: Many of my contributions and leadership roles within IFT fortuitously aligned with my application for the National Interest Waiver and the EB1B Outstanding Researcher, leading to fast-tracked path to my Green Card. These accomplishments came together seamlessly, enhancing my career trajectory in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
