Refreshing the look, doubling down on the message

Refreshing the look, doubling down on the message

A few weeks ago, we asked Above the Fold readers what they loved and what they'd like to change about the newsletter. Some very thoughtful and generous responses rolled in, so ... soak this "How to SoJo" in. This is the last one in which you'll see the current iteration of Above the Fold. Future editions will ditch the intro section in favor of spotlighting newsrooms and journalists doing great work, along with some aesthetic changes we hope makes it more readable. Thank you for telling us what you want to see!

Of course, that makes this the perfect time to remind you to subscribe to any of our suite of newsletters. You can do that by clicking on any of the editions below, or right here.

Now, onto some remarkable resources.

"Many of us know — because we live it every day — that narratives that fan the flames of racism, misogyny, homophobia, etc., put us at risk. One antidote, however, is something journalism doesn’t often discuss: care." That's Shirish Kulkarni, kicking off the April 23 edition of Above the Fold. He cites journalism helpers like Jennifer Brandel, jesikah maria ross, Cristian Lupsa, and Nina Fasciaux as some of those training journalists to live this out. After that, we announce the next round of SJN's Train-the-Trainers. This round is for journalism educators around the world. The Nova Institute for Health's Media Fellowship is now open, and they are excited to hear from some solutions-focused journalists. If you want to catch up on some SoJo learning, you can still get the livestream of Angela K. Evans, Allen Arthur, and Alex Segrè Cohen talking about Cohen's research into climate solutions journalism. And, you can get the livestream of Oscar Abello chatting with Jaisal Noor and Julia Hotz about his book and applying solutions journalism to community economics. All that plus advice on constructively covering climate movements from Jennifer Oldham, MPA and a big moment for SoJo in Nepal from Tumaraj Koirala — you can get all of that right here.

We kick off the most recent edition with newly published research from Sue Robinson, Margarita Orozco, and Joshua Darr showing that newsrooms trained by Hearken, Inc, Trusting News, and SJN created “more content considered to be ‘engaged,’ more transparent stories, and somewhat of a boost in solutions-oriented content.” (Keep scrolling and you'll get examples too!) Next, journalists can learn from the complex and impactful reporting John Diedrich is doing around guns. And, you can Zoom into (or actually visit) a classroom to help students learn about journalism alongside The News Literacy Project. As if that wasn't enough, The Greater Good Science Center has a job open; Positive News is hiring an editor; National Press Club and National Press Foundation have environmental reporting grants open; and Constructive Network is hosting a special day if you're in Rome May 9. Learn about all those wonderful things here.

If you're looking for some quality solutions stories, the democracy edition of Solutions Worth Sharing features Julian Lucas' story about Data Rescue Project, massive volunteer effort to archive and preserve data being scrubbed by the U.S. government. And on the climate side, Courtney D. looks at how cities have divested pension funds from fossil fuels. It turns out ... they don't lose money!

Remember to subscribe at the links, and stay tuned for the new-look Above the Fold. Thanks for reading.

THIS IS A CORRUPTION IN IRELAND THAT PUTS THE UK POSTAL SCANDAL IN THE HA'PENNY PL My first play JUSTICE toured NI and was in the Belfast and Dublin Theatre Festivals plus a week at the Tron in Glasgow. This was in 1992. However, when I wrote 'The Judas Goat', which is about the Belfast Docks Union and Employer Corruption, the diabolical censorship from the Unions, the employers and all and sundry in the Irish establishment set in.
