Reinvent in Zegna’s Design Studio with Senior Designer Piera Castellan

Taking care of the world we live in is a mission that looks to the future with the belief that our present actions will shape our #tomorrow.

This conviction is rooted in the history of the Zegna Group and continues to be a touchstone generation after generation.

More than a mission, at #Zegna sustainability is a constant commitment, a Group responsibility, an individual dedication, and a daily work for the teams that bring the beauty of Zegna garments to life, from the choice of raw materials to design and after-sales service.

This is especially true within the Design Studio, an ongoing experimental laboratory where Zegna merges its DNA and heritage with modern aesthetics, resulting in collections that reflect the evolving needs of clients and times.

Here, the Senior Designer Piera Castellan has the chance to work every day with a lot of fabrics, paddings, and trims, and to make a difference by being an active part of Zegna’s sustainable change.

When asked how Zegna’s #sustainable ethos is reflected in her daily job, Piera realized how easy being part of Zegna’s sustainable ethos is for her.

As a designer, what actually makes the difference is that she has the opportunity to work with the best materials in the world – quality-wise – which are also traceable, recycled, and sustainable.

The road to traceability

Oasi Cashmere is the perfect example of how Zegna's sustainable ethos is naturally present in all the Group's initiatives: ‘Oasi Cashmere is a beautiful project that spreads a message of commitment, passion, and love for the planet and its inhabitants.’

The goal is to guarantee a fully traceable, responsibly sourced cashmere, which is used and reinterpreted in all the product categories: as a simple yarn to create ultra-soft knits, as a lightweight fabric for the most comfortable jacket, to a laminated fabric to create a waterproof ultra-sleek k-way. Each garment of the Oasi Cashmere collection has a QR code to follow its journey from Mongolia through the hands of Zegna’s masters of fabric, to the customers.

Reuse and reinvent

Another project involving the design and planning team is known by the hashtag #UseTheExisting and is being carried out season by season starting in 2019 to achieve the Group's ambitious goal of making the dream of zero waste possible.

The philosophy behind the project is a way of thinking, promoting the reuse of materials at every stage of production. This means continuous research and experimentation on all the recycled components available, from the cloth, linings, and paddings to the buttons, to give new life to existing materials.

This is a project with ambitious goals: as a leading player in the luxury industry and in fabric manufacturing, Zegna wants to promote a trend and movement throughout the entire industry, leading to a future where every single piece of material along the production chain is reused and not wasted.

Reusing and reinventing the existing becomes with Zegna an innovative process and the way to make today's dreams tomorrow's reality.
