A sweet & short take on how we can all lighten the load environmentally
𝗧𝗟:𝗗𝗥
In 2021, Singapore unveiled the Singapore Green Plan 2030, a comprehensive strategy aimed at achieving sustainability across various sectors.
It focuses on environmental protection, resource efficiency, and green innovation. The plan outlines key recommendations to transform Singapore into a sustainable and resilient city-state.
What were its recommendations?

Let's break down some practical examples we can adopt:
𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀: Think of your home's energy consumption like a leaky bucket. The more holes (inefficient appliances, lights left on, etc.), the faster the energy drainage. 𝙁𝙞𝙭 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 '𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙨'! Consider using energy-efficient appliances. You are plugging the holes and making your bucket last longer.
𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿: Your household water usage is a bucket filling to its brim. Think of the long showers and dripping faucets in the kitchen. Be mindful of how much water you use. It could be as simple as replacing the part of your tap.
𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘾𝙝𝙤𝙥𝙚: Imagine the roads during lunch hour at the food courts, - navigating through the congestion to find a seat. Go public (transport). Walk, cycle, or group shuttle. An average person (doing the math - 1 hr commuting over a 40 year working career) 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙘𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝟭𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. That’s a conservative estimate that 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and inefficiencies of being caught in a jam.
𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸: Think of your trash usage as a backpack you carry everywhere. Like my boy’s school bag on Monday mornings, the more stuff you cram, the heavier it becomes. Lighten your load for the journey ahead. If you have already embraced the 3Rs, why not add in 2 more Rs?
o 🍏 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 - Pack light
o 🍏 𝗥𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗲 - Use items multiple times
o 🍏 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 - Find a recycling bin
o 🍏 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 - Your hand me downs, pre-loved clothing
o 🍏 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲 - Do you need to buy that?
Have you heard of the SG Green Plan? 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙞𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙪𝙡𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙, 𝙞𝙣 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡𝙨, 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨, 𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨?
𝙊𝙛 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚 – institutional change can make the biggest impact.
Yet not all actions must start with moving mountains.
I remember a tip a friend shared with me. If you drink lots of coffee like I do, use the grinds and repurpose them. You wouldn’t save many trees nor reduce your carbon footprint much.
𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱.
Identify your individual molehills. But start, keep at it and create more and more molehills. Among some of those practices, a shift could materialise.
