Rethinking Work Alongside Digital Colleagues

For decades, automation promised to make our work lives easier. And in many ways, it has. But it also left a trail of disconnected systems, broken workflows, and jobs stripped down to their most mechanical components. The result? Workers are overwhelmed with tools and underwhelmed with purpose.

What Is a Digital Colleague?

A digital colleague is not a chatbot or a script. It’s an intelligent, context-aware agent designed to collaborate with humans and other agents. These systems can: - Monitor for business events and act proactively - Manage routine steps across multiple systems - Surface relevant insights without being asked - interact with humans in a natural, conversational way.

The key difference to me is they don’t just execute—they align. A digital colleague understands your objective, your role, and your environment, gets to know you, and approaches you and your goals in a personalized manner.

Beyond Busyness: Toward Meaningful Work

Most knowledge workers spend the majority of their day on low-value, high-effort tasks: routing requests, checking systems, and copy-pasting between apps. These tasks sap energy and obscure purpose.

Digital colleagues flip that script. They handle the mechanical so we can focus on the meaningful—whether that’s engaging with a customer, solving a problem, or designing a better process.

In one implementation I discuss in the book, an automation initiative initially aimed to reduce headcount in customer support. After applying agentic principles, the goal shifted: to empower support-agents by aligning it to those mechanical tasks with the express goal of empowering them. The result was higher employee satisfaction, more effective escalations, and faster onboarding for new staff.

Cultural Impact: It’s Not Just Technology

Deploying digital colleagues requires more than architecture. It requires cultural readiness. Leaders must define new roles and relationships between humans and AI, set expectations about oversight and escalation, and equip teams to train and refine digital colleagues over time.

It also requires reframing success. The best metric for agentic automation isn’t how many tasks it removes—but how much value it unlocks.
