As August draws to a close and we step into a new month, here’s a look back at the biggest construction stories that made headlines last week. In this issue, we cover everything from the RTA and Dubai Airports’ collaboration to widen a key bridge, to residents’ reactions to the recent fires in Dubai. We also highlight Egis’ contract win for the Riyadh Monorail, a reminder for the final chance to register for Leaders in Construction: Middle East 2025, and more.
RTA awards contract to widen bridge leading to Dubai Airport T1
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with Dubai Airports, has awarded a contract to widen and upgrade the bridge leading to Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport.
The project aims to enhance traffic flow to the terminal, reduce journey times, and improve customer experience, while accommodating the continuous growth in passenger numbers at Dubai International Airport, which exceeded 92 million in 2024.
Dubai fires: Residents voice safety concerns in high-rise towers, 43% hold developers accountable
With Dubai’s skyline continuing to rise at record speed, the issue of fire safety in residential towers has become a pressing concern. Recent incidents, including two fires in Dubai Marina and one in JVC, have once again raised the question: how safe are the city’s high-rise homes?
To better understand residents’ perspectives, Construction Week Middle East conducted a survey as part of the CW Survey Series exploring fire safety awareness, accountability, and improvements. The results reveal both growing anxiety and clear demands for change.

Deep basements – tackling land constraints through smart design and construction
Deep basements are becoming quite common in central business districts, downtown and prime high-rise developments where the land area is limited and costly. It is also common in cities which have shortcoming of parking spaces because of poor city planning, and therefore impose more strict parking requirements for new developments.
As such, highlighting the design and construction considerations are an important aspect for Engineers to be aware early on and advise their clients such as Developers, Architects, Project Managers and Contractors.
