Running an AI Project like a Marathon

Running an AI Project like a Marathon

This morning, I completed a 10K marathon. It wasn’t my first, but somewhere along the route, a realization struck me - this feels just like running an AI project!

As I paced forward, each phase of the run reflected a stage in AI development. The nervous energy at the start, the grind in the middle, the breakthroughs, the final push, and the exhilaration of the finish line - it all felt familiar.

Before the Starting Line: The Nervous Energy

The air is buzzing with anticipation. Runners of all levels gather - some seasoned pros, some first-timers, but all sharing the same goal: to finish strong.

Starting an AI project feels the same. There’s excitement, optimism, and a shared vision. The team is eager, brainstorming ideas, considering possibilities, and gearing up to bring innovation to life. Everyone knows it’s going to be a journey, but the real challenge is about to begin.

Just After the Starting Line: Momentum Kicks In

The race begins! The crowd surges forward, but it’s a slow and cautious start as everyone finds their rhythm. You maneuver through the runners, trying to settle into a pace that feels right.

Similarly, once an AI project kicks off, there’s a rush of energy and progress. Teams dive into data, build models, decide on LLMs, and set the foundation. But just like in a marathon, pacing is key - rushing ahead might seem tempting, but steady progress ensures sustained success.

At 2KM: Finding the Flow

After the initial adrenaline fades, you start to settle in. You find gaps in the crowd, navigating with more ease, adjusting your strategy. The breathing is steadier, the stride is smoother.

In AI, this is where the PoCs (Proof of Concepts) are completed, and confidence starts building. The team sees the first tangible results. Challenges arise, adjustments are made, but the focus shifts to long-term execution rather than early wins.

At 5KM: The U-Turn

Reaching the halfway point brings a new perspective. You see runners ahead of you who have already turned around. Some are faster, some simply started before you. Their presence is both inspiring and motivating.

AI projects go through this too. You see early adopters and AI influencers showcasing success stories, proving what’s possible. At the same time, you notice those behind you - a reminder of the importance of mentorship, knowledge sharing, and community.

Along the way, you hear encouraging voices: “You got this!”, “Halfway there, keep going!”

The AI world is no different. Thought leaders, mentors, and peers uplift and push each other forward. Collaboration and encouragement matter - they help us all move ahead.

The Up-Hills and Down-Hills: Challenges & Breakthroughs

Some stretches of the course are very difficult - steep climbs that test endurance. You push harder, legs burning, lungs working overtime. It’s tough, but you don’t stop - you slow down, walk if needed, but you keep moving.

AI projects face these uphill battles too - data bottlenecks, integration challenges, resistance to change. It can feel like progress is stalling, but perseverance is key.

Then comes the downhill - a stretch where everything feels easier. The AI equivalent? Model improvements, Automation starts working, you start seeing the Business value.

Momentum shifts, and suddenly, the effort starts paying off.

Seeing the Finish Line: The Final Push

At 9KM, the finish line is in sight. A mix of excitement and exhaustion sets in. This is when mental strength matters most.

AI projects go through this too - final rounds of testing, last-mile integration, stakeholder approvals. The pressure is high, but the commitment to seeing it through keeps the team going.

Crossing the Finish Line: A Moment of Accomplishment

Done! The AI solution is deployed, the impact is real, and the effort was worth it. The sense of achievement is incredible.

But just like in running, this is not the end. There will always be another race, another challenge, another opportunity to improve. So, you reflect, learn, and start preparing for what’s next.

Final Thoughts

Running, like AI, is about consistency, resilience, and continuous improvement.

So whether you’re leading an AI project or working towards a personal goal, remember:

  • Keep learning.

  • Keep pushing.

  • Keep moving forward.

To all those getting started in AI, the most important step is crossing the starting line.

Your next finish line is waiting - go for it!
