Running on Purpose: Lessons from a 327 KM Sprint at Work

Running on Purpose: Lessons from a 327 KM Sprint at Work

Wait, Why Are We All Running?

If someone told me a few months ago that I’d run over 327 kilometers in a month, I’d have laughed—and probably pulled a muscle just thinking about it. 😄

But here we are.

Thanks to a workplace challenge that started as “friendly competition” and turned into something much deeper, I found myself not just moving more—but thinking differently, living more intentionally, and yes—fitting into clothes I’d mentally retired.

Let me take you on the run. 🏃♂️

The Inception of the Challenge 🏁⚡

It all began with a simple idea: let's move more. Our company, MCO (MyComplianceOffice), launched a month-long walking-and-running challenge. Teams. Leaderboards. Step targets. Bragging rights. You know the drill.

What I didn’t expect? This wasn’t just cardio. It was character-building.

The "Before" Story

Picture this: I’m fairly consistent with mental, emotional, and spiritual self-care. But physical health? Yeah… that department was underfunded and over-excused. 🙈🙉

I had dreams of starting a fitness routine, but like most dreams, they came with a snooze button.

Back then, 3 kilometers felt like a small victory, and 5K was a pipe dream. And running more than 50 meters? That was reserved for emergencies—or toddlers heading toward traffic.

The Grand Plan 🎯 (That Wasn’t So Grand)

I set a humble goal for myself:

  • Week 1: 5K a day (K, short for Kilometer)
  • Week 4: Hit an 8K/day average

That was it. Nothing crazy. Just consistency.

Surprise! The Numbers Escalated Fast 📶

Turns out, when your mind aligns with purpose—and your team is cheering you on—magic happens. ✨

Here’s how it played out:

  • Week 1: 36 KM
  • Week 2: 66 KM
  • Week 3: ~90 KM
  • Week 4: 135+ KM

Each step felt like a mini-miracle. But the real transformation? That happened inside. 🪄

Finding a Forest🌲(and Myself)

Somewhere along the way, I discovered a mini forest near my house that I had ignored for years.

My morning runs became grounding rituals. The trees, the breeze, the silence—it all became therapy. I wasn’t just logging kilometers—I was reconnecting with the earth… and with myself.

9 Big Lessons That Transcend Running

1. Start Small, Show Up Anyway 🚶♂️✨

Don't underestimate the power of modest beginnings. It’s okay if your Day 1 looks like a warm-up lap in someone else’s journey. Just show up.

2. Go Slightly Beyond Comfort Daily (Discomfort = Growth)

Push just enough to make it uncomfortable—but not unbearable. It’s the sweet spot where growth hides. Too little, you plateau. Too much, you burn out and start avoiding shoes altogether.

3. Raise Your Own Bar 🏋️♂️

I went on to set an audacious 50% week-on-week improvement target—not because I was chasing glory, but because I was chasing my own potential. Turns out, the bar moves higher 📶when your mind stops fearing it.

4. Mental Shackles are Real, and Meant to Be Broken 🧏♂️

We often think the body gives up first. Nope. It’s the mind that calls it quits long before your legs do. Challenge that, often. ⚡

5. Build in Public 🤝 (It's Better Together)

Sharing daily highs and lows with my team turned this from a solo mission into a collective climb. Encouragement, laughter, light-hearted banter — it made the journey lighter and richer.

6. Accountability > Motivation

Motivation is flaky. Accountability isn’t. Having people who check in, cheer you on, or even throw friendly shade when you slack — that's priceless. And, your ego can be surprisingly helpful when it doesn't want to be outdone.

7. Change of Work Is Rest 🎧👟

Instead of crashing on the couch 🛌 after work, I’d hit the track. Oddly enough, it didn’t exhaust me—it recharged me. Physical exertion helped me mentally reset. Who knew “rest” could come with a playlist and sneakers?

8. Metrics Matter 📈

Leaderboards, progress bars, targets 📊 — they’re not just corporate buzzwords. They actually work. Especially when you’re naturally competitive… 😄 or just don’t want to be the person pulling the team average down.

9. Nature is Free Therapy 🌍

I discovered a mini forest near home—one I had ignored for years. My morning runs there made me feel more grounded, more present. 🌿 And also made me wonder, “Has this always been here?”

When Work Mimics a Long Run

The challenge reminded me how the principles of personal growth are deeply entwined with professional success. Set a vision, break it down into bite-sized goals, stay consistent, push boundaries, collaborate, be accountable, and find joy in the grind. 🏆

Every kilometer I clocked felt like a metaphor for a bigger project at work—a slow start, rising momentum, the occasional slump, then a strong finish. And just like in work, the magic was in showing up even when I didn’t feel like it.

Momentum, collaboration, pushing past mental fatigue—it all applies back at the desk.

A Changed Way of Thinking 🌱

By the end of it, something subtle but seismic shifted.

I started seeing challenges differently. That voice in my head that once said, “I can’t” now says, “Just 3K more.”

It’s like this: the obstacles didn’t shrink, but I grew bigger. 💪The hill remained—but the legs climbing it had changed.

Conclusion: The Real Win Wasn’t Just the Kilometers

Yes, I moved more. Yes, I feel lighter, sharper, stronger. 🧘♂️

But the real victory? I started treating physical health with the same love I gave to mind and spirit. I showed up for the one part of me I had left behind.

Turns out, once you stop treating your body like the neglected department in your self-care company, it starts showing up ❤️🩹 for you — in confidence, clarity, and a surprisingly comfortable pair of jeans.

And now? That voice in my head still talks.

Only this time, it whispers,

“Let’s go for a run!” 🏃♂️🌳

Thank you Avinash Fofalia It’s fantastic so see all that you accomplished here - but even better that you took the time to write about it and encourage others along the way. Well done to Claire O'Donovan and MCO (MyComplianceOffice) for leading the initiative and for all those who responded to the challenge!
