Say Your Name Like You Mean It – How Energy and Enthusiasm Create Influence

Say Your Name Like You Mean It – How Energy and Enthusiasm Create Influence

I was minutes away from delivering my keynote on The Power of Being Unreasonable when it happened.

One by one, members of the executive group introduced themselves.

“Hi, I’m [mumble-mumble], and I do Banking, Real Estate, Contracting, Tech, BlahBlahBlah.”

Their words were flat. Their energy? Nonexistent. By the third introduction, my own energy tanked.

And then—it was my turn.

Why Energy Matters More Than You Think

You can’t expect anyone to be more excited about you than you are about yourself.

If you don’t sound like you care about who you are or what you do, why would I? Why would your clients? Why would your team?

The room didn’t need my original keynote. It needed an energy pump—and a live, in-the-moment lesson.

The Exercise That Changed the Room

I had everyone reintroduce themselves—but this time with two changes:

  1. Focus on the results you create for your clients, not just your title.

  2. Add air and energy to your voice.

Roger Love, my vocal coach, calls the low-energy tone a “squeaky hinge.” That’s not inspiring anyone. Instead, speak on a continuous flow of air. Sit with energy. Smile. Let your posture support your voice.

And most importantly—show that you actually like what you do.

From Rote to Remarkable

Instead of, “I’m a real estate agent,” say:

“I help my clients find the homes they’ve dreamed about—sometimes before those homes are even listed.”

Instead of, “Interest rates are in your favor now,” say:

“I’ve helped my clients leverage their investments so well, they’re now buying the things they’d been putting off for years.”

When you speak with enthusiasm, you create a magnetic pull. People don’t just hear your words—they feel your passion.

Leadership Starts With You

You can’t stand in front of a fireplace and demand warmth before putting in the wood. Likewise, you can’t enter a low-energy room and expect it to light up without you bringing the spark.

You first. Start with a smile. Say your name like it matters—because it does. Share what excites you about your work, especially the results you get for others.

If I’m intrigued by the energy you bring, I might just want those same results—and I might just become your next client.
