In our medical practice, we may view deafness as an obstacle to be overcome or a defect to be corrected. Yet this perception, while seemingly logical, overlooks the fact that deafness is not merely the loss of a sense, but rather an identity, a complete culture, and a sign language of its own.

In this issue of our monthly newsletter, we aim to shed light on the world of the deaf, and on what healthcare practitioners need to know in order to achieve effective communication with individuals with hearing disabilities—knowledge that directly contributes to improving the quality of care and ensuring patient safety.
