Scottish Gov’t Mulls Increasing Offshore Wind Target to 40 GW by 2040
The Scottish Government is seeking public input on plans to increase offshore wind capacity to 40 GW by 2040, with consultations open until August 13. This new target, driven by strong private sector interest, aims to generate enough renewable energy to power 45 million homes. The updated goal aligns with the Sectoral Marine Plan for Offshore Wind Energy (SMP-OWE), which is also under consultation until August 22. The initiative emphasizes Scotland’s commitment to economic growth and investment in renewable energy.
OECD: By 2035, drought expenses will increase by 35%
Droughts are increasingly severe, with economic impacts projected to rise by at least 35% by 2035. Since 1900, drought-affected land has doubled, driven by climate change, which exacerbates evaporation and soil moisture loss. Both developed and developing nations face significant risks. The OECD - OCDE highlights alarming aquifer depletion and stresses the need for improved monitoring and data. An integrated action plan focusing on #water management, soil restoration, and sustainable practices can enhance drought resilience and yield long-term economic benefits.
Powerful Window-Sized Device Transforms Dry Desert Air into Fresh Drinking Water
MIT engineers have developed a window-sized device that converts dry desert air into safe drinking water using hydrogel technology. This innovative gadget collects water vapor, which condenses on a chilled glass surface, producing up to 160 milliliters of drinkable water daily without needing electricity, solar panels, or batteries. Ideal for arid regions, the device could also be effective in more humid climates. Researchers are working on improving the hydrogel for enhanced water generation.
Enertis Applus+ Study: LONGi BC Modules Outperform TOPCon in LCOE, Driving Higher Commercial Value
Enertis Applus+ has analyzed a 47MW single-axis tracker PV project in Seville, Spain, comparing back-contact (BC) and tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) technologies. The study found that LONGi Solar 's Hi-MO 9 modules outperform TOPCon in energy yield, cost control, and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). Hi-MO 9 achieved a 3.4% higher energy yield and a lower LCOE of €0.02706/kWh, demonstrating its effectiveness for utility-scale solar projects and supporting decarbonization efforts.
Paris Air Show: TotalEnergies Signs a Deal with Quatra to Secure Feedstock for its Biorefineries
TotalEnergies and Quatra have signed a 15-year agreement starting in 2026 to supply 60,000 tons of used cooking oil annually to TotalEnergies’ biorefineries, supporting the production of biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Quatra will collect the oil from various sources in France and Europe, process it, and deliver it to TotalEnergies. The La Mède and Grandpuits biorefineries will utilize this feedstock, enhancing TotalEnergies' commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Toray establishes water treatment technology center in Saudi Arabia
The Middle East Water Treatment Technical Center (MEWTEC) was established in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, by Toray Industries, Inc. Membrane Middle East (TMME) to meet the growing demand for water in bordering regions, Africa, and the Middle East. The center offers integrated technologies for desalination and wastewater reuse. It aims to promote technological collaboration with academic institutions and research facilities while enhancing Toray's #sustainability vision by providing advanced reverse osmosis technologies to address global water scarcity.
RWE and Amazon deepen clean power ties in new deal
RWE and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have signed a Strategic Framework Agreement to enhance RWE's digital transformation and support Amazon's sustainable energy goals. Ulf Kerstin of RWE stated that the agreement is a milestone for clean energy infrastructure. Howard Gefen from AWS noted their role in accelerating RWE's digitalization through AI and analytics. This partnership builds on previous agreements, aiming to optimize trading and renewable energy applications while strengthening AI research collaboration.
