Self-Care Tips to Better Lead Your Team

Self-Care Tips to Better Lead Your Team

As leaders, we often find ourselves focused on the tasks at hand, driving performance and productivity in our teams. However, authentic and compassionate leadership goes beyond managing deadlines, goals, and objectives; it requires us to prioritize our own well-being and foster a culture that cares about the overall wellness of our teams.

When I joined Actualize Consulting, I wanted to create a holistic approach to our success—one that prioritized personal and corporate wellness in every aspect, from physical and mental well-being to healthy, well-functioning operations.

My goal was to foster a culture that made both me and my colleagues proud of our workplace, which led us to focus on our people first. We began infusing our leadership operations with the same techniques I had found successful in my personal life, such as effective communication, personal wellness, healthy work-life balance, conflict resolution, team connection, and setting clear intentions.

By applying these principles, we established a foundation that extended to all employees, and the process of cultivating our culture was underway. Six years after prioritizing our people, our attrition rates—which once hovered around 33%—now stay within a 5% turnover rate.

With over 20 years of experience in leading teams and as the creator of the proven Culture Infusion® program, I’ve witnessed firsthand how investing in our personal growth enhances our leadership capabilities and creates a thriving environment for our teams.

In honor of Self-Care Month, I’m sharing five key self-care tips that can transform the way we lead, making us more empathetic and inspired leaders.

1. Embrace Mindfulness in Daily Practices

Mindfulness is a profoundly impactful practice that encourages us to be present and engaged in our surroundings. Incorporating mindfulness into our daily routines—whether through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or moments of reflection—allows us to connect with ourselves and others on a more meaningful level. Utilizing mindfulness minimizes stress and boosts our ability to empathize with our team members’ experiences.

2. Prioritize Open Communication

Creating an environment of open and honest communication is essential for fostering trust and connection within your team. Regularly check in with your people and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings. Ask thoughtful questions that help you gain better understanding into their needs and insights into who they are as human beings. This practice not only supports individual well-being but also strengthens team cohesion and morale. (insert questions LI article) By actively listening and validating their perspectives, you create a safe space where everyone feels valued and supported no matter their role.

3. Lead by Example: Model Wellness Practices

As leaders, our actions speak louder than words. By prioritizing your well-being—taking breaks, embracing flexibility, and showing vulnerability—you set a standard for your team to follow. Demonstrating that it’s okay to prioritize self-care encourages others to do the same, creating a culture where well-being is valued and respected. Leading by example is the most effective way to create an environment where employees feel encouraged to invest in their own wellness.

Recently, while on vacation, I indulged in a wonderful facial. The esthetician not only provided an amazing treatment but also offered to host virtual self-care events for our team. We decided to embrace this opportunity! These sessions will be held over lunch, allowing us to connect and recharge together. Everyone will receive materials in advance to ensure they can fully participate. We’ve previously enjoyed relaxing virtual massages and facials, and I can’t wait to see how these new sessions will enhance our well-being even further.

4. Infuse Gratitude into Daily Interactions

Gratitude practice is a simple action that creates a profound impact in your daily life as well as your ability to handle work and responsibilities. Recognize your team’s efforts, celebrate small victories, and express appreciation for their contributions. This not only boosts morale but also cultivates a positive atmosphere where team members feel seen and valued. One way we implement this at Actualize is through internal gratitude sharing, where our team shares their weekly wins and what they are thankful for in both their personal and professional lives via an email thread. A culture of gratitude can generate a ripple effect, inspiring employees to express appreciation and support for one another.

5. Make Space for Continuous Learning and Growth

Commit to your personal growth and development by pursuing opportunities that challenge you. Whether it’s through attending workshops, reading leadership books, or seeking mentorship, prioritize learning as a lifelong journey. Investing in yourself has a life-long impact, enhancing your quality of life, skillsets, and demonstrating to your team the importance of self-improvement and resilience.

Final Thoughts

Self-care is vital to effective leadership. Through prioritizing wellness and growth, for ourselves and our teams, we pave the way for a healthier and more productive workplace. At Actualize Consulting, we’ve integrated these principles into our Culture Infusion® approach, resulting in a thriving, people-first environment where everyone excels.

As we pause to reflect on what it means to care for ourselves during National Self-Care Month, I invite you to assess your current wellness practices and identify areas where you can incorporate self-care practices into your own life.

Are you prioritizing your own wellness and leading by example?

Are you encouraging your team to pause, recharge, and prioritize their well-being?

As leaders, we can drive change in creating healthier workplaces and foster a culture where everyone thrives by leading with intention, empathy, and a commitment to well-being, together.

If you're unsure where to begin, I encourage you to start with small steps and learn more about the Gratitude and Culture Infusion® programs.

So well said. One of the things I’ve appreciated most during my internship at Actualize is the encouragement to focus on self-care. Definitely worth reading!
