Should You Learn Flutter in 2025? A Look at Its Future

Flutter has been getting a lot of attention recently, with many people wondering what its future holds in the tech world. Some even say that Flutter is dead or dying. In this blog, I’m going to share what I’ve learned about all these rumors. I’ll explain the reasons behind the layoffs and take a look at the future of Flutter according to the team behind it. Let’s dig in and clear up any confusion so you can make up your own mind!

Understanding the Layoff Scenario

Layoffs in big companies aren’t really a surprise anymore. I did some research and found out that, in 2024 alone, more than 529 tech companies let go of around 149,870 workers. This kind of thing happens regularly in the tech world. It often follows a pattern where companies hire a lot during times of economic growth, then have to lay people off when the economy takes a downturn.

We’ve definitely seen this happen after the pandemic, when companies hired quickly but later realized they overestimated their needs, leading to big layoffs.

Back in May 2024, Google made the decision to lay off employees from its Flutter, Dart, and Python teams, which raised some questions about Flutter’s future. But here’s the thing: layoffs don’t always mean a product is failing. They can happen for many reasons — like cutting down on duplicate roles or changing focus to other projects. So, while it’s normal to have concerns, it’s important to understand that this doesn’t automatically mean Flutter is on its way out.

Why Flutter is Not Dead

Even with the recent layoffs, Flutter is definitely here to stay! I’ve been keeping an eye on this, and I can tell you, Google is still very committed to Flutter. Kevin Mode, a project manager at Google, mentioned that Flutter continues to get regular updates and strong support from the community.
