The Significance of Data in the Security Industry: Key Takeaways from the ACS24 Panel Discussion
Recently, I had the chance to moderate a panel discussion at ACS24 Europe, where a group of industry experts delved into the role of data in the security industry. The panel included Anthony Chow , CEO and co-founder of igloo ; Dan Katz , Vice President of Enterprise and Alliances at Brivo ; David Hughes , Head of Product at Comelit-PAC ; and Michael Vandeven , CEO of Engilux.
The topic of discussion revolved around the assertion that we are now a data industry, and this data is being applied to the security industry.
The panel unanimously agreed with this sentiment and expressed that the industry has evolved from focusing on security to leveraging data for business insights.
One of the key takeaways was how data has become a vital part of the decision-making process. For instance, Brivo has been using data to understand what information is essential to its customers and serve it in a way that makes sense to them. They have been continuously refining their data presentation based on customer feedback.
The panel also emphasized the importance of respecting the customer's data. They stated that the data ultimately belongs to the customer, not the company. Therefore, it's crucial to establish consent and enable the customer to delete, edit, and manage their data.
The discussion further highlighted the significance of data privacy and the need to comply with regulations like GDPR. The panelists stressed the importance of vigilance when sharing data, ensuring it's clean, controlled, and used in compliance with data privacy laws.
Another interesting point was the impact of data on business models. Data-centric approaches have become the norm, helping companies understand their customers better and tailor their offerings accordingly. This shift has also paved the way for AI's role in interacting with security systems, a future that seems closer than ever with the widespread adoption of cloud technology.
In conclusion, the panel discussion underscored the transformative power of data in the security industry. Data is shaping the sector and driving its future. As we progress, it will be interesting to see how companies continue leveraging data to enhance their offerings and deliver more value to their customers.

1yI completely agree that we are seeing a swing in the industry towards data, because well, we've got the data... However, I still think there is a significant gap between having access to data and effectively utilizing it to guide decisions. I've seen folks convinced they're making data-driven decisions, but biases and preconceived notions still cloud their judgment. It seems there's a need for better education and tools to help leaders truly analyze and interpret data to make informed decisions. Without this understanding, the full potential of data insights remains untapped. And unfortunately, for our industry, there are many dinosaurs still operating the same way they always have. Yes, I said it :)
