Social Media is Not a Real Place

Social media is the one social activity where the more time you spend on it, the less social you become.

If you believe that, well then, I'm "so glad you're here." Picture me saying that to you as if I were the doorkeeper at a recovery meeting. Obviously, we're not, but what if your job (or career) depends on you using social media to stay up-to-date and engage with clients, to market yourself, and if that's the case, most likely help you find and attract potential leads?

Now, what do you do? Are we supposed to become more social on social media platforms and less social in "real life" because we have to make a living and put food on the table? Or are we supposed to discard our phones and adopt a simpler life?

Well, I happen to believe there's a balance, and it's not that impossible to attain it, which should say a lot because from the outside looking in, you're probably saying to yourself, "Derek's about as social media as social media gets." But that's where you're wrong; you only see me on social media, and that's why you believe that.

Here's the irony about sales, marketing, and especially personal branding: Everyone sharing their tactics is right, and at the same time, everyone sharing their tactics is wrong (let this sink in for a second).

Read anything on social media about the topics mentioned above (sales, marketing, personal branding). You will undoubtedly find people with whom you agree and even more so those with whom you disagree, but you will never know if what someone is telling you works or doesn't work because you are not them.

For the record, here's my opinion (just in case you're asking). It boils down to trust. Do I trust the person giving the advice? If you're following, that is the foundation of what I'm building Disruptur on…

TRUST.

If you're in sales, or you're in marketing, or you're looking for your next career, ask yourself these two questions:

  1. Does my online presence align with who I claim to be?
  2. Am I trustworthy?

Again, only you know the answer to those questions.

Just a heads up, if you genuinely answered "no" to either of those questions, then maybe we should talk.

That is, if you trust me, of course.

Thanks for reading this. You’re awesome.
