Software Asset Management, People, Process and Tool

What is Software Asset Management?

To have control of your hardware and software assets. Software Asset Management means the inventory of your hardware and software and matched with your entitlements (procured licenses and agreements). To Accomplish a fully functional SAM operation. But also the whole software lifecycle. From demand to installation, upgrade, and termination.

You need 3 things.

  1. People
  2. An inventory tool
  3. Processes

Why does business implement SAM? 3 reasons, cost savings, optimization, and to avoid the risk of audits. (unpredicted costs)

  1. The SAM People, SAM always begin with the people. Regardless how sophisticated your SAM tool and process might be, they are nothing without the people that works with them. That’s why we at Xensam always start with the people first and ask ourselves: How can we make the Software Asset Manager’s life easier? We have focused on user-friendly interface and customization.
  2. The tool, this is where Xensam comes in. The main purpose of all SAM tools should be to provide the Software Asset Manager with clear and pre-analysed software and license data so that the Software Asset Manager can focus his/her expertise to make decisions to optimize the environment and drive cost savings.

The Process of Software/hardware lifecycle. From the business need to end of life and software there are several steps that need to be followed. To be successful with SAM these steps need to be optimized.

NICE! SAM needs all 3 - PPT. Shame that in University circles, upper management have no idea what these acronyms mean. And thanks to the analysts like Gartner, I get messages like "we should be able to save 30% on our software costs". Sure just click on the DO MAGIC button, I say.
