Sol-Ark Powers Portland’s Dignity Village
In the heart of Portland, Oregon, a remarkable community known as Dignity Village stands as a testament to resilience and innovation. Established over two decades ago, Dignity Village is the nation's longest-standing sanctioned tiny home community for individuals transitioning out of homelessness. This self-governed village has long relied on propane for heating and lighting, a solution that, while functional, posed safety risks and financial burdens.
Recognizing the need for a sustainable and safe energy solution, Sol-Ark joined forces with Twende Solar and K2 Systems US to bring clean, reliable solar power to Dignity Village. Over the course of two years, more than 80 volunteers and 20 residents dedicated over 800 hours to install 200 solar panels across 31 rooftops, including 43 homes and a community commons building. Sol-Ark contributed advanced inverter technology, while K2 Systems provided the necessary racking equipment. This collaborative effort was further supported by funding from The Portland Clean Energy Fund in collaboration with Verde Builds, and battery storage donations from Rolls Battery Engineering.
The impact of this project is profound. For the first time, residents can rely on consistent electricity for lighting, heating, cooling, and charging devices. The shift from propane to solar not only enhances safety but also brings financial relief, with the village anticipating annual savings of at least $3,000 on electricity costs. These savings are redirected into the community, supporting essential services and providing residents with greater financial stability.
Ray, a village council member, encapsulated the sentiment of the community: "Come January, we're gonna be warm." But beyond warmth, this project symbolizes autonomy and empowerment. Dignity Village serves as a blueprint for how stable housing, supportive infrastructure, and access to clean energy can transform lives.
At Sol-Ark, our mission extends beyond developing resilient energy systems; we are committed to investing in resilient communities. Our partnership with Dignity Village exemplifies how collaborative efforts can lead to meaningful change, proving that when people are equipped with the right tools and support, they can rebuild and thrive.
