SSEN Distribution’s £2.5m upgrade to the electricity network between Banchory and Aboyne
A major upgrade to the local electricity infrastructure is currently underway between Banchory and Aboyne which, when complete, will boost the reliability of supplies for around 2,700 customers across the area as well as increasing network capacity.
This £2.5m investment by SSEN Distribution sees them working with their contract partner – OCU – to install 13km of new upgraded overhead lines which, in turn, will be supported by over 200 replacement wooden poles.
This combination of new assets will not only make the local network stronger and more able to withstand the challenges of a typical Aberdeenshire winter, the upgraded transformers and lines will also be able to transport more load and support the increase in low-carbon technologies such as EV chargers and heat pumps in local homes and businesses.
SSEN Distribution’s Construction Team Manager, Graeme Gill, explains more:
“This 6-month project is a major boost to the network in and around Banchory and Aboyne, and one that will make a big difference to local supplies for many years to come when we finish the works in September.
“We all know how fiercely the winds can blow in this area over the winter months, and so it’s vital that we have poles and lines that are as strong as possible to reduce the risk of any weather-damage. As part of this project, we’re replacing over 200 of the existing wooden poles with new, stronger versions - and by putting in 13km of new lines at the same time, this is a programme of work that will have a positive impact for many years to come.”
On some occasions, temporary traffic management has been necessary to ensure everyone’s safety.
Graeme continues:
“We’re committed to carrying out our work with the minimum amount of disruption, but there are certain times on the project when temporary traffic management is required to keep everyone safe – an example of this being when our teams are replacing sections of the overhead line which is crossing a road. On behalf of everyone working in our teams, I’d like to thank drivers in the area for their patience and understanding as we work hard to upgrade the network.”
Was on the first stage with generation impressive work happening in front of your eyes. Back up in a week or so. 👌
