Steering Through Storms: A Tale of Resilience and Leadership Amid a Global Pandemic
In 2020, as the world was reeling from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself stepping into a leadership role at the Institute for Social Transformation. It was a time of global turmoil and uncertainty, but it was also a moment of personal triumph, a prayer answered, and a dream realized.
The transition into leadership was swift and unexpected, but I chose to embrace the journey. I reminded myself of a crucial life lesson: Never say no to an opportunity presented to you. Fear of failure should not be a deterrent, but rather a motivating factor. I told myself, "You can do it, don’t fear to fail. Make failure your friend."
This period was particularly challenging due to prevailing stereotypes around leadership and age. The notion that age equates to wisdom and capability is a deep-rooted one, but I am proud to have been part of the wave of young leaders proving that age is merely a number. The energy, innovation, and resilience that young people bring to the table are invaluable assets in any leadership role.
My journey was not without its challenges, but I was fortunate to have great mentors who contributed significantly to my resilience in leadership (Dr Joyce Tamale, Jackie Asiimwe, Dr. Thelma Awori, Hon. Rita Atukwasa, Hope Chiggudu, Mr. Paul Wagubi and Mr. Richard Makumbi-RIP). Their guidance and support were invaluable, helping me navigate the complexities of leadership during a global crisis.
However, mentorship alone was not enough. I also had to rely on my tenacious spirit. This inner resilience, a combination of determination, grit, and optimism, propelled me forward. It gave me the strength to face challenges head-on, to make tough decisions, and to keep going even when the path ahead was uncertain.
Leadership is a journey, not a destination. It requires a strong support system, and a team that shares your vision and isn't afraid to challenge you when necessary. Do not let ageism deter you from pursuing leadership roles. On this bumpy journey, it’s about the people you inspire, the changes you instigate, and the legacy you leave behind.
As I reflect on my leadership journey during the pandemic, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity, for the challenges that have shaped me, and for the people who have supported me along the way. It has been a journey of growth, resilience, and transformation, and I am excited to see where it leads next.
