Studying in a Virtual Environment: Challenges Students Face
Studying in a virtual environment has altered the student experience.
The generation of students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic may be more internet-savvy than their teachers, but that doesn’t mean they find adapting to an online learning environment any less difficult.
The complete shift to a virtual classroom has affected the way students interact and engage with their classmates and professors. It has also presented students with a set of challenges, from technical issues and distractions to finding the motivation to study.
Technical issues
Technical issues are some of the most frustrating challenges students have when studying in a virtual environment. Computers suddenly hanging or breaking down, Wi-Fi signals becoming spotty or disappearing altogether, microphones not working - these are all bound to happen and are often beyond the student’s control. These instances can cause anxiety to students and become an obstruction to learning.
Distractions
Studying remotely from home also means students can easily be distracted, whether by other family members working from home, younger children, and even pets. Students would also have to juggle family responsibilities along with their coursework.
Lack of motivation
Lastly, the lack of in-person interaction with friends, classmates, professors, and counselors can also have an impact on a student’s drive to learn. It can lead to feelings of loneliness and cause a student to lose the motivation to attend classes.
Overcoming challenges
It is important to note that these challenges may be overcome with understanding and support from the family and the school community. Technical support, encouragement, and open communication on the side of the school can make students feel more confident about being able to attend classes online. Meanwhile, family members should also help in creating a conducive environment, which will enable students to truly learn and adapt to the virtual school environment with ease.
