The Surprising Gateway to Mindfulness (Even for ADHD Brains)
Let’s get something out of the way:
If you can binge watch a show on Netflix or sit through a 1-2 hour movie and not miss a beat— You. Can. Meditate.
Yup, I said it.
Earlier this week I shared how a great story, especially a good edge-of-your-seat, plot-twisting movie doesn’t help us escape life. It helps us drop in. Even those of us who wear our ADHD like a merit badge.
Because when the storytelling is good, we’re not checking our phones. We’re not multitasking. We’re not trying to “get it done.”
We’re right there. Hooked. Present. Curious. Awake. (A.K.A. Mindful.)
The Real Block to Meditation Isn’t ADHD. It’s Apathy.
Let’s be honest: a lot of people say, “I can’t meditate. I have ADD.” And while yes, neurodiversity matters and every brain is wired uniquely—that’s often not the whole story.
What they often really mean is:
“I’m not interested in it.”
“I don’t want to sit still.”
“I don’t get why it matters.”
“I don’t want to invest time in something that feels intangible.”
Fair. We live in a hustle culture obsessed with productivity and proof. And meditation? It doesn’t hand you a gold star five minutes in.
But guess what? Neither does a movie. You choose to sit, stay, and tune in—because the story grabs you.
Here’s Where Active Listening Comes In
Before you go full lotus on a mountain peak, start here:
🔹 Listen like the story matters.
Whether it’s a guided meditation, a song, a TED talk, or your own thoughts—practice tuning in with all your senses.
🔹 Let go of needing to feel “still.”
You can be mindful while walking, journaling, doodling, or dancing. Listening is a moving meditation when done with intention.
🔹 Follow the thread.
Like any good movie, your thoughts will wander. Bring your awareness back to the “plot.” That’s the practice. That’s the power.
Active Listening = Mindfulness in Motion
It’s not just a skill—it’s a gateway. When you practice being fully present with sound, story, or silence, your nervous system recalibrates.
You learn to pay attention—without freaking out.
You build focus, even if your brain likes to jump timelines.
You start experiencing moments, not missing them.
For some people, this is the stepping stone into deep meditation. For others, it’s the main event.
Try This Today:
🎧 Put on a short guided meditation or storytelling podcast (links to my meditation in comment).
🪑 Sit or move—whatever feels good.
👂🏽 Just listen. Not to do it right. But to show up fully.
You don’t need to start with silence.
You just need to start listening like it matters.
Because if you can tune in to the story… You can tune in to yourself.
And when that happens?
Your whole life becomes the plot twist.

3moI really love this take! It’s so true, if we can get completely absorbed in a Netflix series, we can meditate. It’s not about sitting still with a blank mind, it’s about being present with intention. This reframe makes mindfulness feel way more accessible, especially for busy minds like mine.
