A Symphony of Success: QMA and the British Council
What happens when two cultural and educational powerhouses combine? Magic. In marking the British Council 's 90-year legacy in Qatar, which has sparked incredible positive change. A wonderful example of this impact is the story of the Qatar Music Academy (QMA).
I recently spoke with QMA's Director, Zlatan Fazlic, and the head of the Western Music Department, Dr. Ozgur Mert Esen, to hear their remarkable story firsthand.
From a Dream to a Thriving Music Hub
Back in 2011, QMA opened its doors with only 35 students. Fast forward to today, and that number has grown to over 500, with a waiting list of 250. But this isn’t just about numbers; it’s about a vision. QMA uniquely blends Arab traditional music with Western classical music, creating a vibrant cultural space where students learn, grow, and expand their musical horizons.
This commitment to excellence has produced impressive results. Their students are now winning major international competitions, and graduates are gaining entry into top conservatories worldwide.
The Power of Partnership: Inspiring the Next Generation
A key factor in QMA's success is its dynamic partnership with the British Council. The council has played a vital role in bringing world-class artists to Qatar, including the renowned violinist Savvitri Grier, who led transformative masterclasses for QMA students.
Dr. Ozgur Mert Esen recalled the "open eyes" of the young students, many of whom were beginners, as they watched a virtuoso perform just a few feet away. These experiences were more than lessons; they motivated students to pursue new goals and aim for international standards.
For QMA, the British Council is more than just a partner. They are a "friend" whose "inspiring" and "transformative" work perfectly matches QMA’s mission. This collaboration has not only improved the academy's programs but has also enriched the entire cultural community in Qatar.
