Taken... a personal experience

Tuesday, in the early hours, someone stole two bikes from our garage.

Its 6.30am, dark and the garage door won't open. Really annoying when you're in a rush to get to the station. Manual override done and only a few minutes late, I'm on my way. Then the phone call to tell me the reason the garage wouldn't open was because it had been broken in to and the bikes were gone. I never even noticed...

Of course, bikes are replacable but the thought of somone identifying us as a target, then breaking through our defences is quite scary. The parallel with Cyber Breach is easily drawn and the same learning is also relevant. We thought everything was secure and despite what we believed were good security measures, it still wasn't enough.

So what did we learn?

  • Don't be complacent, test your security measures - new threats appear all the time.
  • Have a plan to follow if the worst does happen - and test it, regularly.
  • You are not alone... stay connected, share the experience, support your community.

It also made me re-think my view on companies who are targeted and experience a malicious attack. If their defences were good and they respond pro-actively and responsibly should we punish them further with a huge fine? Are we actually just kicking someone while they are down.

Any thoughts?

I had two bicycles stolen from where I live in Eton recently from a secure bike storage. Just by chance I was coming home the next evening and Thames Valley Police based themselves at our train station to put everyone on bikeregister.com Apparently bike theft is the new car theft. Also never thought it would happen to me!!

Great advice Sally! The problem is the assumption that “it’s not going to happen to me”.... one that’s hard to beat really, and makes us all complacent
