Thermal Growth & Machinery Movement - The Informative Brief

Thermal Growth & Machinery Movement - The Informative Brief

How to perform precise shaft alignment to machines which are exposed to thermal growth?

Thermal Growth - It is the amount of machinery movement, both horizontal and vertical, due to temperature change.

Dynamic Movement - It is the total amount of equipment movement by all factors such as pipe stress, including thermal growth.

Some machines are intentionally misaligned in the (Ambient Temperature) so they move into alignment as they operate in the (Operating Temperature).

To compensate for this dynamic movement, we use ( OL2R ) which is Off-Line to Running application on (Fixurlaser NXA).

Methods of performing alignment in cases of thermal growth;

  • TLC Method

Temp. Difference x Linear Dimension x Coefficient

Average Temp Change x Length between shaft center and leg x Material Factor = Expansion Value

Apply this value to each foot of the machine in order to compensate the value of such growth while performing cold alignment.

  • Hot & Cold Check Method

Take alignment measurement when machine is cold

Start the machine and wait till it reach the normal operating conditions then stop and take another alignment measurement.

This is a great addition to obtain at an advanced level of alignment. I know it sounds off a little but alot of techs are struggling with the basic of soft concepts and using the coupling tolerance vs machine tolerance. Keep up this kind of onformation because it forgien to many and needs exposure.
