A Thought-Provoking Incident: The "Blind Suggestion Box"
During a recent visit to an institute to meet its senior leadership, I stumbled upon something both amusing and disheartening—a so-called “Blind Suggestion Box”. To my surprise, it was actually a paper shredder disguised with a label.
This sight left me stunned and raised a few unsettling questions:
🤔 Is this how suggestions are treated here?
🤔 Are they stifling curiosity and dismissing the ideas of their people?
🤔 Does the leadership operate on a "My Way or the Highway" mentality?
Leadership Involves Active Listening
For me, leadership is simple yet profound. It’s about fostering an environment where every voice matters. It's about creating spaces where ideas, no matter how big or small, are respected and nurtured.
These reflections came from my experiences in transformational leadership, live coaching, and discussions with industry leaders during my work on the book "Behaviour - New Technology Impact on Future Generation."
Leadership Should Be Inclusive, Not Autocratic Autocratic leaders foster silence and compliance, but inclusive leaders cultivate trust, collaboration, and innovation. Inclusivity invites team members to contribute their best ideas and ensures every voice feels heard and valued.
360-Degree Feedback: A Game-Changer The best leaders don’t just seek feedback from their direct reports—they invite reviews from peers, subordinates, and even external stakeholders. A 360-degree feedback system ensures: Leaders receive a balanced perspective of their impact. Blind spots are identified and addressed. A culture of accountability is fostered.
These reviews create a transparent leadership culture where feedback flows in all directions—not just top-down but also bottom-up and laterally.
Feedback is a Gift Feedback is the only free resource that has the potential to transform both leaders and organizations. Leaders must treat it as invaluable, whether it’s positive, constructive, or critical. Ignoring feedback, metaphorically or literally (as with the "Blind Suggestion Box"), sends a clear message: “We don’t care about improving.”
Innovation is a Team Sport Innovation thrives in environments where curiosity is celebrated, and questioning the status quo is encouraged. Teams feel a sense of ownership when their suggestions contribute to the organization’s success.
Curiosity Drives Progress Organizations grow when they nurture curiosity at all levels. Leaders must set an example by being curious themselves—actively seeking feedback, exploring new ideas, and challenging their own perspectives.
Good Leaders Listen; Great Leaders Act Listening is the first step, but action is what differentiates great leaders. Acting on feedback demonstrates respect for the team’s input and reinforces trust.
The Role of 360-Degree Reviews in Building Inclusive Workplaces
Implementing 360-degree feedback is a realistic and transformative way to ensure leadership remains grounded, approachable, and aligned with organizational goals:
Accountability: Leaders are evaluated not just on results but also on how they lead—whether they inspire, collaborate, and engage effectively.
Empathy Building: Leaders gain a better understanding of how their actions impact those around them.
Trust and Openness: Employees see that their opinions matter, building a culture of transparency and mutual respect.
Continuous Improvement: Leaders can identify their blind spots and work on them with coaching, training, or mentorship programs.
Organizations that embrace 360-degree reviews send a powerful message: Leadership isn’t about power; it’s about impact.
Practical Ways to Foster an Open and Innovative Culture
Here are actionable steps to avoid becoming the symbolic “Blind Suggestion Box”:
Set Up Transparent Feedback Channels Replace suggestion boxes with digital platforms where feedback can be shared anonymously.
Close the Feedback Loop Feedback without follow-up leads to disengagement. Communicate back to employees: What action will be taken based on their input? What challenges might prevent implementation? How their ideas have shaped the organization.
Normalize 360-Degree Feedback Make it a routine part of leadership evaluations. This could involve: Anonymous peer reviews. Partners Feedback, Employee satisfaction surveys focusing on leadership behaviors. Stakeholder reviews to assess external perception.
Recognize and Reward Contributors Publicly acknowledge employees whose ideas lead to positive change. This not only motivates them but inspires others to contribute.
Train Leaders in Active Listening Leadership training should emphasize empathy, active listening, and implementing feedback effectively. Leaders who listen deeply can respond thoughtfully and act decisively.
Final Thoughts
This so-called “Suggestion Box” is a harsh reminder of what happens when leadership neglects its most vital role: fostering an environment of trust, engagement, and open communication.
If we want organizations to thrive, leaders must:
Embrace 360-degree feedback.
Build a culture of trust and transparency.
Act on the gifts of feedback and ideas.
Let’s not let paper shredders—or their metaphorical equivalents—be the symbol of how we treat ideas. True leadership lies in listening, valuing, and incorporating diverse perspectives.
👂 What’s your take? Have you experienced organizations that embrace or reject feedback cultures? How can we better integrate 360-degree feedback systems to drive growth? Let’s discuss!
