Let’s talk about something that’s been dividing India for centuries—language. From heated debates in the Parliament to states squabbling over language dominance, India’s linguistic diversity is both its superpower and its biggest headache.
But guess what? Indic AI initiatives might finally be coming to the rescue!

Bhashini, AI4Bharat, and Sarvam AI are on a mission to ensure that language is never a roadblock to accessing tech, governance, knowledge, or when ‘building AI for Bharat’.
Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys, summed it up best: “If you really want to make access to technology universal, we should be able to provide that access in a language of choice of the citizen.” That’s the dream that these AI-powered projects are turning into a reality.
When Lex Fridman interviewed PM Modi, thanks to Sarvam AI, the podcast got translated into nine Indian languages, including Odia, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. Suddenly, millions more Indians could tune in without struggling with English or Hindi.
And the Sarvam team didn’t stop there. They’re now teaming up with UIDAI for Aadhaar services, to improve user experience with AI-powered voice-based interactions in 10 Indian languages—with more coming soon!
“You should be able to interact with the digital world in your own language and through voice,” said Vivek Raghavan, co-founder of Sarvam AI, while speaking about why Indic AI is important.
All on Board!
In fact, the government is actively working towards breaking the language barrier using AI through Bhashini. Most recently, the team signed an MoU with the Lok Sabha Secretariat to create Sansad Bhashini, an AI-driven solution that will make parliamentary proceedings multilingual.
That’s not all, the Supreme Court is also hopping on the AI train. The National Informatics Centre will help translate judgments into 18 Indian languages using AI.
Meanwhile, the folks at AI4Bharat are busy building India’s biggest multilingual AI models. Their latest project, IndicTrans3, supports translations across 22 Indic languages—all available on Hugging Face for open-source access.
Amidst these developments, the IndiaAI Mission might drop the list of accepted proposals for building AI models any time now. Watch the first episode of AIM’s Point Break, where we figure out if India can actually build its AI model.
Why Does Indic Language Matter?
Pushpak Bhattacharyya, chairman of the National Committee on Indian Language Standards, told AIM that such government-backed AI initiatives are very important for solving language problems in the country. “AI adoption in India will have much more variety, many more nuances, and a lot of diversity. That’s what makes it unique,” he said.
India isn’t the US. AI here isn’t just about making enterprises richer—it’s about bringing millions of people online in a language they actually understand. As Nikhil Malhotra, CIO at Tech Mahindra, put it: “For anyone in India, their first thought process triggers in their own language—that’s AI for Bharat for me.”
