Thursday Thoughts: Momentum is Easier Kept Than Restarted

Thursday Thoughts: Momentum is Easier Kept Than Restarted

This week, I faced a tough reality:

After two weeks away celebrating my anniversary with Michelle, I stepped back into the gym for my first workout. I didn’t even go full throttle, instead I intentionally eased back in, but it still felt like my body was asking, “Hey…what are we doing here?”

I’ve always found it amazing how fast you lose ground when you stop exercising something. Whether it’s physical fitness, habits, relationships, or skills, taking your foot off the gas can quickly turn into a full stop if you’re not careful.

It reminded me of a Proverb I think about often:

“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest and poverty will come upon you like a thief, and scarcity like an armed man.” ~Proverbs 24:33-34

That verse isn’t only about money. It’s about everything that matters. Because when you ease up, it’s easy to fall into “poverty” in different ways:

  • Physical poverty - losing health, strength, and energy
  • Relational poverty - weakening connections by neglecting friendships and family
  • Spiritual poverty - feeling distant or disconnected from God because you stop making space for reflection, prayer, or study

The uncomfortable reality I was reminded of is that momentum is easier kept than restarted. Consistency matters. Even a little effort each day is far better than going hard sporadically, then burning out or drifting away.

I felt this firsthand with my workout this week. I’ve felt it in relationships when I don’t make consistent effort. I’ve felt it spiritually when I’ve let daily disciplines slip.

Consistent and intentional effort is where the magic is. It protects the progress you've made. It keeps you moving forward, even slowly. And when life inevitably throws disruptions your way (good or bad), the momentum helps you get back on track.

That Leads Me to This Week’s Challenge…

What’s something important in your life that you’ve let drift recently? Maybe it’s your health, a key relationship, your faith, or a personal goal.

This week don’t try to fix it all at once. Just take one small, intentional step back toward consistency. One workout. One conversation. One prayer. One choice.

Because it’s easier to keep momentum than to restart it, but it’s never too late to get moving again.

I’m grateful you took the time to read this, for choosing to work, and for being part of what makes this world amazing.
