Tipping points: Scaling circular solutions for energy, textiles & waste

Tipping points: Scaling circular solutions for energy, textiles & waste

Data centre build out is accelerating at historic speed. For the first time in decades, developed economies are seeing real net new energy demand. That kind of shift doesn’t come along often – and it brings big challenges and opportunities.

  • For energy companies and policymakers, this is a clear demand signal: a chance to rethink energy systems for scale, resilience and sustainability.

  • For investors, it opens up a wide field of opportunities – from grid infrastructure and sustainable construction to frontier tech and efficient chip design.

Our short paper, Data centres: A generational opportunity to rewrite the energy playbook?,  explores the opportunities and risks associated with the burgeoning demand for data centre build out, with implications for the energy sector and investors.

Launch webinar: Achieving a breakthrough for textile recycling in Europe

Join us on 21 May for the launch of The Textile Recycling Breakthrough – a new multi-stakeholder study led by Systemiq that presents the first tipping points analysis on textile-to-textile polyester recycling in Europe.

The 60-minute webinar will cover key insights from the study, including:

  • What’s holding back large-scale recycling of polyester waste in Europe?

  • The role of policy - including the upcoming Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and EPR – in closing the cost gap between recycled and virgin polyester.

  • What brands, recyclers and others can do to help unlock a tipping point.

The session includes a presentation of key findings, a panel discussion with industry leaders followed by an audience Q&A.

Scaling circular waste management: Project STOP’s progress in 2024

At Systemiq, we believe solving the waste and plastic pollution crisis requires system-level change. That’s exactly what Project STOP is delivering in Southeast Asia.

Since its inception in 2017 by Borealis and #Systemiq, Project STOP has:

  • Provided access to waste collection services to 517,000 people

  • Created 280+ full-time jobs in the waste sector

  • Collected 79,000+ metric tons of waste, including 12,000+ metric tons of plastic

As part of Project STOP Banyuwangi Hijau – focused on establishing a Regency-wide circular waste management system in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java - we launched the Project STOP Banyuwangi Hijau Digital App with Accenture Song to enhance waste collection efficiency.

We also welcomed funder and scale-up partner @Clean Rivers who will play a crucial role in expanding access to circular waste management services to nearly 2 million people across all Project STOP locations.

💫 Next milestone: Groundbreaking for the second material recovery facility (MRF) in Banyuwangi in the second half of 2025, fully funded by Borealis.

Energy and Communications have been closely coupled from inception. That includes battery and generator backup in case of disruption for emergency resilience. We are also at a fork on the path for AI between centralized and distributed systems/agents that need to be considered in planning. Centralized dependency is exponentially more volatile for reliability. Autonomous AI needs to be decentralized, reducing energy demands. The emerging IEEE spatial web protocol for Web3.0 has a completely different architecture than the incumbent protocols.
