The Top 5 Most Produced Commercial Aircraft In History
In the past century, thousands of commercial aircraft have taken to the skies, transforming air travel and shaping the global aviation industry. Among these, five aircraft have stood out as the most prolific in terms of production. Let's explore the aircraft that have left an indelible mark on the world of aviation.
1. The Douglas DC-3
Introduced in 1936, the Douglas DC-3 is a venerable aircraft, known for its longevity and versatility. While a total of 16,079 DC-3s were built, with most serving non-commercial roles, 607 civil variants were operated by major airlines like American, United, TWA, Eastern, and Delta. However, its true moment of fame came during World War II, with over 10,000 military versions produced. Today, around 160 DC-3s are still in service, despite production ending in 1950.
2. The Boeing 737
The Boeing 737, with over 56 years of history, is a legendary aircraft and a record-breaker. In March 2018, it achieved the remarkable milestone of being the 10,000th 737 produced. Over 11,575 of all generations have rolled off the production line, with more than 8,000 still actively serving airlines worldwide. The 737 is operated by over 5,000 airlines across nearly 200 countries and remains the best-selling modern jet aircraft globally.
3. The Airbus A320
Although introduced two decades after the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 family has made a significant impact on the aviation industry. As of September 2023, a total of 11,126 A320 aircraft have been built, with 11,083 already delivered and nearly 7,000 more on order. The A320ceo has been the most produced, with 4,752 delivered, but the A320neo and A321neo are gaining popularity, making the A320 family the second most produced modern commercial jet.
4. The Canadair Regional Jet
The Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) family, consisting of the CRJ200, CRJ700, CRJ900, and CRJ1000, has been a staple in regional air travel since its launch in 1992. Operated by various regional airlines, the program concluded in 2020, with 1,945 CRJs produced. About 1,057 CRJs remain active, connecting passengers on regional routes.
5. The Boeing 727
Introduced in 1960, the Boeing 727 was designed for shorter city routes, becoming popular in the short-haul market. Over 1,800 were delivered, making it the most-produced commercial aircraft for over a decade. Today, only a few 727s are still in service, offering passengers a unique experience.
The future bestseller: The Boeing 777
With nearly 1,718 deliveries and a promising future with the 777X, the Boeing 777 is well-suited for the modern age of long-haul travel. The 777's efficiency and comfort may position it as a replacement for the iconic 747 as airlines transition to the next generation of widebody aircraft.
These aircraft have shaped the world of aviation and will continue to leave their mark for generations to come.
