Transferring What You Learn … Turning It Into Positive Action & Behavior Change

Hey hey, what’s going on y’all?! 👋🏾 Welcome to the 4th week of August… can you believe we’re about to enter the ‘ber’ months already?! (Septem-ber, Octo-ber, Novem-ber, Decem-ber 😳🎃🦃🎄)

Time is flying! … and as the year winds down, the big question is: Are YOU winding UP? ⏰🚀

This week’s theme is all about making sure the things you’ve learned so far this year don’t just stay in your notebook or on the shelf … but actually turn into action, momentum & results. Because learning is cool 😎 - but living it out is where the magic happens. ⚡️

From Insight to Implementation

Let me ask you a question … how many times have you left a training, conference, keynote, or even finished a powerful book thinking: ‘Wow, that was incredible!’ … only to realize a month later that nothing in your life or business has actually changed? 🙋🏾♂️ (I have … 🤷🏾♂️)

It happens to all of us. Why? Because insights without action are like seeds that never get planted. 🌱 They have the potential to grow into something amazing, but if they never make it into the soil, they just sit there.

The true difference-maker isn’t what you hear or what you write down - it’s what you actually do next. That’s where the transformation happens.

Think about it this way: a notebook full of brilliant ideas is just a diary unless you take the first step to put one of those ideas into practice. Implementation is where the rubber meets the road, where inspiration turns into results.

And here’s the kicker: it doesn’t have to be a massive, overwhelming step. Most times, it’s the smallest shift ... making that call, sending that email, having that conversation, taking that pause - that moves you from 'I learned something' to 'I lived something'.

So here’s my challenge for you this week: look back at the last insight that lit a fire in you. But, don’t just admire it ... don’t just let it sit in your notes. Take that insight and ask yourself:

👉 “What’s the ONE action I can take to put this into motion right now?”

Because that’s how you move from insight ➡️ to implementation ➡️ to transformation. 💡⚡

The Compound Effect of One Change

Here’s the good news: you don’t have to flip your whole world upside down to see real transformation. In fact, trying to change everything at once is usually a recipe for frustration and burnout.

Instead, focus on the power of one. 1 choice. 1 habit. 1 step forward.

Think about it like this: when you start a new exercise routine, it’s not the one workout that gets you fit. 💪🏾 It’s the repeated action, the 'Daily Discipline' (*thanks Chris Vasami for sharing!) day after day, that builds strength & endurance. The same is true in your business, relationships, leadership, finances - pick one change and stick with it long enough for the compounding effect to kick in.

That’s how small steps become big wins.

📈 Just like compounding interest in your bank account, little deposits made consistently add up to massive growth over time.

The key? Consistency beats intensity. Don’t worry about making a giant leap - focus on the daily step that moves you in the right direction.

Here’s a practical example:

  • Instead of saying, “I’m going to overhaul my whole morning routine,” commit to waking up 15 minutes earlier and using that time to journal, read or move your body.
  • Instead of saying, 'I’ll never eat fast food again' (*wishful thinking), commit to packing one healthy lunch each week.
  • Instead of saying, “I need to connect with everyone on LinkedIn,” commit to sending one authentic message a day. #PowerOf1

Over weeks and months, that one shift compounds ... and, before you know it, your results look completely different.

Because transformation doesn’t come from doing everything - it comes from doing something, that one thing, consistently. 💥

Breaking the Knowledge–Action Gap

Here’s the tough truth: most of us don’t have a knowledge problem ... nope, Nope, NOPE! ... we have an action problem.

Think about it. Between podcasts, YouTube, Google, webinars, ChatGPT and the endless scroll of LinkedIn posts, we’ve got more information at our fingertips than ever before. The real challenge isn’t learning morev… it’s actually DOING something with what we already know.

I call this the Knowledge–Action Gap. It’s that space between what we know we should be doing … and what we’re actually doing.

Bridging that gap requires three things:

  1. Intentionality – being clear about why you’re taking action.
  2. Accountability – having someone (or some system) that helps keep you on track.
  3. Courage – because let’s be honest, sometimes we don’t take action simply because it feels uncomfortable or scary. #FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt)

Here’s the reality: information without application leads to frustration. But when you start applying what you know, even in small ways, you create momentum. That momentum builds confidence. And that confidence fuels even more action.

💡 Example: You already know that relationships drive business. But when’s the last time you actually reached out to a client or colleague just to check in, with no agenda? You already know that health is wealth. But when’s the last time you chose to walk a few extra steps instead of sitting it out?

See the difference? The magic isn’t in the knowing - it’s in the DOING.

Because closing the Knowledge–Action Gap is how you turn potential into progress. That’s how you move from inspired to transformed. 🚀

JOLT!⚡️At SHRM Florida

I had the privilege of presenting a JOLT!⚡️ Breakout Session at the HR Florida Expo and Conference. Afterward, several audience members came up to me and shared how much they appreciated a challenge I gave them during the session:

👉 'Pick 1.'

Now, Panera has their famous 'Pick 2' 🍲🥪 … but I told the audience, 'Larry Long Jr. has Pick 1!' 😂 haha

Why? Because when we try to change everything, we end up changing nothing. But when you pick just one action - and actually follow through - you set yourself up for real progress.

The feedback confirmed that this simple challenge resonated deeply. People walked away not just inspired, but with a clear action to take. And that’s the heart of growth: transferring what you learn into positive action and lasting behavior change.

If we practice closing the Knowledge-Action Gap on each of the 126 days left in 2025, what would 2026 look like? 🔥
