I ask this because we find ourselves witnessing what might be history's most sophisticated form of intellectual counterfeiting. Armed with nothing more than a ChatGPT subscription and the audacity to copy-paste, legions of self-appointed experts are flooding every conceivable domain with content that carries all the linguistic markers of authority whilst possessing none of its substance.
The worst part? You probably couldn't tell the difference.
I'm not opening an article with an insult (because I couldn't tell the difference either), but rather a practical assessment that we inhabit a world where AI content and human content have become practically indistinguishable. Nobody is immune from it, and we're not wired as beings to spend our lives hypervigilantly assessing every piece of content we encounter – especially when it validates our existing beliefs and principles. This creates what we might call the "Confirmation Bias Amplification Loop™" – where AI-generated content that confirms our worldview slides past our critical faculties like a diplomatic passport through customs.
The challenge nowadays isn't that AI produces poor content – quite the opposite. Modern language models craft prose with such convincing authority that distinguishing between genuine expertise and algorithmic pastiche has become genuinely difficult. Most of us aren't experts in any particular domain, let alone the vast constellation of fields we encounter daily.
Consider this: if a cutting-edge research scientist wrote a paper about protein folding, neither you or I are anywhere near qualified enough to know whether what they're saying represents plausible breakthrough or complete fabrication masquerading as peer review.
Now, most people aren't reading academic papers about niche subjects for recreational purposes, but they are consuming political party manifestos, shared content on Facebook, and forwarding messages on WhatsApp – all fertile ground for the "Expert Cosplay Economy™" where authentic-sounding analysis can be generated faster than you can say "unprecedented market volatility" with associated social circle impacts.
When your LinkedIn feed overflows with "thought leadership" that reads like it emerged fully formed from the digital equivalent of Zeus's forehead, we've entered territory that demands immediate attention. Put simply – everyone isn't necessarily an expert. To be slightly more pointed, it's disingenuous to suggest that someone possesses deep knowledge only to discover they can't actually deliver such impressive-sounding ideas without an internet connection and thirty seconds of prompt crafting.
At least until Meta or Google builds augmented reality glasses that project the illusion of knowledge directly onto retinal displays. At that point, we'll inhabit even more dangerous territory – the "Intellectual Augmented Reality Hellscape™" where distinguishing between authentic understanding and real-time algorithmic assistance becomes impossible.
The mathematics of this deception are stark: a prompt engineer with three weeks of YouTube tutorials can now generate content indistinguishable from someone with decades of domain expertise. The cognitive load required has dropped from years of study to approximately thirty seconds of strategic questioning.
We've democratised not knowledge, but its convincing simulation.
As I've argued elsewhere, there exists a fundamental difference between data, knowledge, and understanding – and the fact that people are beginning to believe there isn't represents a philosophical crisis with practical consequences. Why? It's because this represents something far more pernicious than simple plagiarism.
It's intellectual identity theft at industrial scale.
The Content Pollution Crisis
What we're experiencing amounts to epistemic poisoning of the well on an industrial scale. The information ecosystem becomes contaminated not with obviously false content, but with plausibly authoritative material generated by those who lack the foundational knowledge to evaluate what they're publishing.
This creates what I call the "Dunning-Kruger Amplification Engine™" – a system where limited domain knowledge combines with unlimited content generation capacity to produce confident proclamations about subjects the author couldn't defend in actual expert company.
I encountered a similar dynamic in the early-to-mid 1990s when I started learning to become a musician with something approaching professional ability. Digital software such as OctaMED and ProTracker allowed me to write, and later perform, tracks despite possessing only the piano-playing skills of an average secondary school student despite the frustrations of Mr Pryor. Despite that limitation, I've been able to learn music theory, as well as both compose and perform music through such tools – for money and for audiences.
Does this make me a hypocrite for critiquing new tools when I've built a career using technological "aids"?
That's for you to decide, but I'd argue that creativity plus tools is far better than lazy inputs plus automation.
What I do posit, however, is that the person wielding AI as an expertise amplifier faces a fundamental problem: how do you quality-control output when you lack the domain knowledge to assess its accuracy?
It's rather like asking someone who's never driven to evaluate the performance of a Formula 1 car – they might produce eloquent commentary about the experience, but you probably wouldn't want them making technical recommendations about how to adjust brake calibration.
My use of AI operates within defined parameters. I employ it to produce content that I could otherwise create, but through which technological assistance generates output faster than manual crafting would allow. I'm not outsourcing the thinking but rather the tedious mechanics of creating pro forma drafts or internal one-pager content that leverages domains I actually understand – the world of enterprise architecture – to create material I can safely evaluate as competent, mediocre, or completely fabricated.
This approach may sound limiting, but it isn't. It helps me become more productive whilst maintaining intellectual guardrails. If you pay money for me to deliver a public speaking engagement – or attend the occasional musical performance I might undertake from time to time – you can observe me creating output in real time, rather than watching someone frantically search for optimal prompts and reliable internet connectivity.
This may sound like I've dropped straight out of Chicken Licken and started proclaiming the sky is falling, but this isn't hyperbolic speculation about future possibilities.
This is precisely what's happening across every field imaginable right now.

The resulting content often sounds authoritative precisely because it's been trained on genuinely authoritative sources. It carries the linguistic DNA of expertise whilst being utterly divorced from the lived experience that creates actual competence.
This creates the "Authoritative Hollow Man Problem™" – content that possesses all the stylistic markers of expertise but none of its substance.
The Confidence-Competence Paradox
Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of AI-assisted content creation lies in how it amplifies the Dunning-Kruger effect inside our collective consciousness. Those with minimal domain knowledge often demonstrate maximal confidence in their AI-generated insights, creating a perfect storm of authoritative-sounding ignorance.
Whether you consider this problematic broadly correlates with what your day-to-day professional reality looks like.
The field in which I operate depends on practical "blue collar" thinking – where you must earn credentials through tangible experience, documented knowledge, measurable successes, and instructive failures to argue credibly about "knowing the lay of the land" beyond the theory.
Textbooks and frameworks, conversely, offer seductive but ultimately incomplete approaches to complex problems. No matter how polished the PowerPoint presentation appears, I find it difficult to process the concept of a Blue Chip CEO paying £250,000 to a 25-year-old consultant for guidance on "optimising their business operations" – as if individuals at that career stage can authoritatively discuss anything beyond the case studies featured in even highly ranked Ivy League MBA programmes.
The difference lies in methodology: the "blue collar" approach demands reflection on failure as much as success. Not eloquently generated prose that sounds convincing, but the intellectual humility that emerges from repeatedly discovering what doesn't work. Trust me when I say that personal failure teaches you lessons that no text book or AI prompt can understand, let alone share experiences of.

The market, unfortunately, often rewards this confident simplicity over genuine expertise with its inevitable complexity.
On a broader societal level, the rise of populism demonstrates similar challenges with confident proclamations about problem-solving based on simplistic and ultimately inadequate methodologies.
The Signal-to-Noise Problem
The practical challenge for ordinary people lies in how the sheer volume of AI-assisted content creation threatens to drown authentic expertise in a sea of algorithmic approximation. When anyone can produce professional-sounding content at industrial scale, distinguishing between genuine articles and convincing simulations becomes genuinely difficult.
Consider this: if I sent you a one-page description of services my team offers, how would you determine whether I'd written it or AI had generated it? Let's venture into even more unsettling territory – how would you know whether I'd written any of my published prose, notwithstanding that long-suffering readers will recognise my professional writing career predates the rise of large language models? If I'd started today versus decades ago, I'd argue nobody could tell the difference.
After all, with sufficient determination, it wouldn't require extensive effort to aggregate my collective output as columnist and journalist online and in printed media, then train a model to replicate my particular brand of overly verbose language peppered with extensive parenthetical asides.
Could you distinguish between me and MattGPT?
This creates what we might call the "Authenticity Verification Crisis™" – where determining the provenance of intellectual property becomes as complex as medieval genealogy research but with higher stakes and faster turnover.
The challenge mirrors what I experienced when digital music production democratised composition, but which only became apparent after file-sharing services like Limewire, Napster, and Kazaa (revealing my advancing years) followed by the launch of iTunes and then streaming services created equivalent conditions to current AI proliferation.
What emerged was the "Content Inflation Problem™" – an explosion in quantity that corresponds to no increase in actual quality or value. Rather like printing currency Weimar Republic style, flooding markets with AI-generated expertise devalues the exchange rate of genuine knowledge.
How do you evaluate the credentials of faceless consultancies dominating Google search results when you cannot validate their output? Does this generate increased uncertainty about professional hiring for tasks beyond our expertise, or does it allow us to develop discernment for quality in ways similar to recognising excellent cuisine despite not being Heston Blumenthal or Gordon Ramsay?
Consider the second-order effects: actual experts find themselves competing not just with other experts, but with an infinite army of AI-assisted content creators who produce material faster, cheaper, and often more optimised for algorithmic distribution.
The asymmetry becomes brutal.
Someone with genuine expertise might invest weeks crafting thoughtful analysis, only to watch it disappear beneath dozens of AI-generated articles published the same day. Perhaps I'm foolish for continuing to hand-crank articles using little beyond my own cognitive resources and a decidedly unfashionable spell-checking plugin for Obsidian (my preferred writing tool).
Or perhaps I maintain faith that human creativity represents something worth preserving - that you read the content to hear my views – even when AI could generate far more content than I ever could with potentially greater algorithmic appeal.
We're witnessing Gresham's Law applied to intellectual content: bad expertise drives out good, with considerably less discussion about precious metal value and significantly more concern about the carbon footprint of superfluous digital material.
The Watermark Solution: Production Transparency
The solution isn't to ban AI content creation – that horse has not merely bolted but established a thriving consultancy practice selling "Digital Transformation Initiatives™" that most people couldn't distinguish from frameworks created by actual experts. This partly reflects the wholesale appropriation of intellectual property that feeds these systems, creating what might be termed the "Great Knowledge Kleptocracy™" where original thinking gets absorbed into algorithmic recombination engines.
Instead, we need transparency about production methods that enables readers to make informed judgements about consumption choices.
A comprehensive watermarking system should reveal the actual production process behind content:
Input Disclosure: What prompts, sources, or raw materials fed into the AI system? If someone's "expert analysis" of renewable energy markets emerged from a single Wikipedia page and three ChatGPT iterations, readers deserve transparency. Without "sourcing context" – broadly similar to food labelling regulations within the UK market – we cannot differentiate between those who use AI to refine their existing knowledge and those who generate content entirely through prompt engineering.
(I'll acknowledge that was deliberate subversion of my own argument to sow seeds of productive doubt about my own created content - sorry, not sorry as I love infinite meta layers to any topic).
Processing Transparency: Which AI systems were employed, how extensively, and what level of human oversight was applied? Was this content generated entirely by AI, edited by humans, or genuinely collaborative? The "AI Involvement Spectrum™" ranges from light editorial assistance to complete algorithmic authorship – readers should understand where specific content falls on this continuum.
Expertise Credentials: What domain-specific knowledge does the human publisher actually possess? Not their job title or LinkedIn endorsements, but demonstrable experience with subject matter under discussion. Possessing the impressive title "Founder of Wizmatic Cloud Platform Limited" means precious little if your closest encounter with a shell occurred during a Mario Kart gaming session.
Iteration History: How many attempts were required to produce final output? Content requiring extensive prompt engineering to achieve basic coherence tells a different story than material emerging cleanly from initial inputs. Anyone can generate content about anything – you could copy this article into ChatGPT and request an alternative article in my voice with different themes, and it would arguably generate something reasonably coherent.
The hope remains that you value human experience documented in textual format rather than merely seeking readable content produced by non-human intelligence - the reason why, in basic terms, art sells for money because of a correlation with human experience as much as "paint arranged on a surface".
This watermarking wouldn't prevent AI-assisted content creation but would restore agency to readers making informed decisions about whose analysis deserves attention. Think of it as the "Intellectual Nutrition Label Initiative™" – providing the information necessary for conscious consumption choices.
The Authentication Economy
Implementing production watermarks would also create an "authentication economy" – market differentiation based on production transparency rather than output similarity. When AI-generated content becomes commoditised, genuine expertise backed by demonstrable experience becomes increasingly valuable.
This operates similarly to our current understanding of digital security: we know to verify domain names for online banking, download official applications from the Google Play Store or Apple's App Store, and scrutinise suspicious emails.
We recognise that some things require validation. Validation serves everyone's interests – building trust in both content and the AI systems supporting creation, leading to superior outcomes across the board.
This transparency would serve multiple constituencies effectively. Readers could calibrate trust appropriately. Genuine experts could differentiate their offerings from algorithmic approximations. Even skilled AI users could demonstrate competency in prompt engineering and quality control through the "Transparent AI Utilisation Framework™".
The current system obscures these crucial distinctions, creating false equivalency between someone who's invested decades developing expertise and someone who's spent an afternoon optimising prompts. Watermarking would restore natural market hierarchy based on actual value creation rather than content similarity.
Without this infrastructure, we approach a world where AI writes tenders, AI responds to those tenders, AI evaluates submissions, and AI awards contracts – only to discover that brilliantly worded alignment with Amazon's Well-Architected Framework reflected prompt engineering rather than genuine understanding.
This represents the "Full-Circle Automation Paradox™" where human intelligence gets systematically removed from processes requiring human judgement.
The Predictable Push Back
Naturally, those currently benefiting from "expertise arbitrage" would resist transparency requirements. Why reveal that your "comprehensive market analysis" emerged from minimal inputs when opacity enables commanding expert-level attention and compensation?
The objections prove predictable: watermarking would stigmatise AI assistance, stifle innovation, create unnecessary barriers to content creation, or prove technically unfeasible to implement.
These arguments miss the fundamental point entirely.
The goal isn't preventing AI-assisted content creation but restoring honesty to information ecosystems. If your content provides genuine value, production methods become irrelevant. If its value depends on concealing creation processes, perhaps that reveals something significant about actual worth.
Cynics might argue: why not charge £20,000 for reports requiring seven minutes to generate – some of which involved coffee procurement and prompt contemplation? Well, beyond obvious considerations of human decency, respect for one's clients, and a desire for genuine honesty, capitalist theory suggests that reduced costs plus high profits represent ideal outcomes – provided we abandon moral considerations and focus on less than honest human principles.
Despite technological advancement, maintaining trust in consumed information remains fundamentally important before we fracture into infinite points on scales with no ability to trust anything beyond supposedly expert LLM-generated output.
The Institutional Imperative
This extends beyond individual content creators – institutions face identical authenticity challenges. When consulting firms generate sophisticated-sounding reports using AI systems trained on competitors' actual work, how do clients distinguish between genuine analytical capability and expensive prompt engineering?
Could you differentiate between authentic Big Four presentations created by actual teams versus rough analogues generated from training data scraped from BCG, Bain, or McKinsey websites? I couldn't – and suspect I'm not alone in this limitation.
Academic institutions grapple with similar questions as students submit AI-generated assignments that technically satisfy requirements whilst demonstrating zero actual learning. Professional associations observe their fields flooding with practitioners whose "expertise" consists primarily of effective prompt crafting.
These aren't merely moral concerns – they're fundamental to humanity's ability to learn over time through accumulating foundational knowledge acquired via experience. AI generation provided to young people might create wholly dependent populations unable to think independently once mobile signals disappear temporarily - this isn't a technological issue, but a social one.
Solutions require institutional adoption of transparency standards acknowledging AI's legitimate role whilst preserving distinctions between human expertise and algorithmic simulation. We cannot close Pandora's box, but we can establish frameworks ensuring we distinguish between authentic and synthetic knowledge.
This demands what we might call the "Institutional Truth-in-Content-Creation Accords™" – industry-wide standards for disclosure and verification.
The Future of Authentic Expertise
Watermarking represents more than purely technical solutions – it's a philosophical statement about authentic human expertise's value in ages of convincing simulation. It acknowledges that whilst AI produces impressive outputs, production context matters enormously for assessing value and reliability.
Following wholesale appropriation of publicly published material, some form of reckoning becomes necessary – even if the digital music market history offers little hope, where even highly compensated streaming artists require extensive touring just to generate sustainable income.
The question isn't whether AI should assist content creation – that's already occurred. The question becomes whether we'll maintain transparency necessary for distinguishing between different types of intelligence and experience.
AI remains fundamentally trained on human content in ways synthetic data cannot replicate. The value proposition, even when technical limitations around context windows and constraints disappear, faces practical reality: AI model training depends on consistent human input but perhaps creates digital dependency that proves difficult to abandon if subscription prices increase dramatically.
To summarise: watermarking would create incentives for genuine learning rather than mere output optimisation. When production methods become visible, markets can properly reward both skilled AI utilisation and authentic domain expertise.
Demonstrate excellent prompting? Show others your methodology and move toward open-source models creating shared benefits, rather than digital black boxes where distinguishing confident content from competent content becomes impossible.
This brings us to the "Transparent Expertise Ecosystem™" – where human knowledge and AI capabilities work together openly rather than in deliberate obscurity.
The choice we face lies between information ecosystems based on transparency versus those built on increasingly sophisticated deception.
The tools for either path already exist.
The only question remaining is which future we'll choose to construct.
