ON THE ROAD

Mid-June traffic restrictions across Europe

Transport activity across Europe is being shaped this week by widespread truck driving bans. Switzerland continues to enforce overnight restrictions for vehicles over 3.5 tons, while Austria, Poland, and several other countries are imposing full-day and weekend bans tied to national observances and seasonal traffic control. INNOVATIVE TRANSPORTATION

Testing the limits of automation in European road freight

Autonomous truck technology is moving closer to deployment on Europe’s roads as EU-funded researchers test self-driving vehicles across key logistics corridors. The MODI project is trialling automated trucks equipped with advanced sensors, radars, and AI along a 1,200 km route from Rotterdam to Oslo. These vehicles are being tested in real-life conditions, including ports, border crossings, and urban transitions, to prepare for broader use in long-haul freight. With industry partners like Einride and Volvo involved, the trials aim to address driver shortages and improve logistics efficiency while supporting Europe’s green and digital transport goals.
