Trump Threatens Mamdani's Citizenship

President Donald Trump has sparked widespread condemnation after making incendiary remarks targeting Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for Mayor of New York City. During a visit to a migrant detention facility in Florida, Trump questioned Mamdani’s citizenship and threatened to have him arrested if he follows through on his campaign promise to end cooperation between city authorities and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

  • Speaking before a crowd of reporters and supporters, Trump stated, “If Mamdani, as mayor, tries to block ICE from doing its job, we’ll have to arrest him. No one is above the law.”
  • The president then went further, insinuating—without providing any evidence—that Mamdani might not even be a U.S. citizen. “We’re looking into how he got here,” Trump said. “Some say he shouldn’t be in this country at all.”

Zohran Mamdani’s Citizenship: The Facts

  • Contrary to the president’s claims, there is no legitimate question surrounding Zohran Mamdani’s citizenship. Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, in 1991.
  • He moved to the United States at the age of seven and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018, after completing the standard legal process required under U.S. immigration law.
  • Public records confirm his citizenship status, and no credible evidence has emerged to challenge it.
  • Legal scholars and immigration attorneys were quick to point out that Mamdani’s citizenship cannot be revoked based on policy disagreements or political views. Naturalized citizens hold the same rights and protections as those born in the United States.
  • Accusations of immigration fraud or terrorism must be substantiated through a thorough legal process and cannot be used as political weapons.
  • Nevertheless, senior administration officials reportedly confirmed that the Trump administration is considering an investigation into Mamdani’s naturalization process.
  • Unnamed sources have said that intelligence agencies were instructed to look into any potential “security concerns,” though no formal charges or findings have been made public. So far, the administration has produced no evidence to support any claim of wrongdoing by Mamdani.

Mamdani Responds: “This Is Intimidation”

  • Mamdani, who currently serves in the New York State Assembly and has built a strong base among immigrant communities and progressives, responded forcefully to Trump’s threats.
  • In a public statement issued from his campaign headquarters, Mamdani said, “This is not just an attack on me. This is an attack on every New Yorker who believes in justice, dignity, and the rights of immigrants. We will not accept this intimidation.”
  • Mamdani emphasized that refusing to cooperate with ICE is entirely legal, citing multiple court rulings affirming that local governments are not obligated to enforce federal immigration laws or honor ICE detainer requests. “The mayor of New York has every right to refuse to use city resources to help ICE detain and deport our neighbors,” he said.

A Broader Pattern of Political Targeting

  • Trump’s remarks appear to be part of a broader campaign to discredit and intimidate progressive politicians, particularly those who advocate for immigrant rights and criticize U.S. foreign policy.
  • Mamdani, who is of Indian and Ugandan heritage, is also known for his vocal support of Palestinian rights and his criticism of U.S. military aid to Israel—positions that have attracted backlash from conservative groups.
  • Some civil rights organizations have called on the Department of Justice and Congress to investigate whether Trump’s comments constitute abuse of presidential power or a violation of Mamdani’s civil rights.
  • The American Civil Liberties Union issued a statement calling Trump’s remarks “dangerous, unconstitutional, and reminiscent of authoritarian regimes.”
