This last week has seen five companies using three of the currently hyped technologies finally admit that the marketing Hype is just that and are changing direction towards more realistic strategies.
Amazon have admitted that they cannot get Machine Learning to work for recruitment processing and have cancelled the project.
IBM seem to have realised that they had significantly oversold the capabilities of their Watson Cognitive systems and have spent $40B on acquiring the Red Hat Linux company, so that they can concentrate on Hardware and Systems software and servises.
Uber and Lyft have stated that they will be reducing their own Autonomous Vehicle systems development and will rely on third party AV systems. In addition, they will no longer concentrate only on their Taxi systems and will move towards Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and are acquiring electric bike and electric scooter companies and are working with transit companies, bus and rail).
John Krafcik of Google Waymo has stated that full Level 5, fully autonomous cars will not be available to operate on all conditions in the foreseeable future and that even level 3 and 4 autonomous cars will not be ubiquitous for many decades.
This confluence of reality realisations are, in my forty years experience of the IT field, unique. We have never seen this happening before.
This video explores the Leadership imperatives for senior Financial officers raised by the the levels of unrealistic expectations promoted by the creators of these advanced technologies. In particular, they need to consider the impact and consequences of the extraordinary costs of failed IT related projects based on the Standish Group Chaos reports, see https://youtu.be/_-tkQm4mWZs
