Unlocking the true value of Internships: What should students aim for?

As an HR professional, I often encounter students wondering about the real purpose and significance of internships. Questions like "What should we aim for?", "Should I focus on learning or earning?", and "Are unpaid internships truly beneficial?" frequently arise in these discussions. It's completely normal to feel uncertain, especially when taking your initial steps into the professional world.

Securing an internship while pursuing your degree is a wise decision. It enhances your CV and provides an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world situations. However, many students are hesitant about unpaid internships, wondering if they are worth the effort. While receiving a stipend is certainly appealing, concentrating solely on financial compensation might mean missing out on the broader benefits an internship can offer.

Here’s what you should genuinely prioritize during your first internship:

1. Internships Are About Real-World Learning

Internships serve as a bridge between academic knowledge and the practical skills required in the industry. Here’s why they are essential:

  • Gain Hands-On Experience: Learn how to utilize industry tools, software, and techniques in a professional environment.

  • Adapt to Professional Environments: Understand workplace dynamics, teamwork, and the significance of punctuality and discipline.

  • Explore Career Paths: Experience your chosen field and evaluate whether it aligns with your interests and long-term aspirations.

~ Takeaway: As Confucius (a Chinese philosopher, teacher, and political theorist) once said, "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." Internships allow you to apply what you've learned, like using tools such as Google Analytics on actual projects helps you to turn your theoretical knowledge into lasting skills.

2. Treat Networking as a Long-Term Investment:

One of the greatest benefits of internships is the opportunity to connect with professionals who can help and guide your career. Your network can lead to future opportunities that a degree alone may not provide.

  • Attend Company Events: Sit in team meetings, workshops, and discussions where you can observe and learn from others.

  • Seek Feedback: Regularly request constructive feedback from mentors and supervisors. This demonstrates your willingness to learn and grow.

  • Build Strong Relationships: Create authentic connections with colleagues and managers. Keep in touch even after your internship ends, as they could play a crucial role in your career development.

~ Takeaway: From my own experience, I can say that networking during your internship is just as important as finishing your assigned tasks. Creating meaningful connections can lead to unexpected opportunities.

3. Skills Trump Stipends:

When selecting an internship, focus on the learning opportunities and the company’s reputation rather than just the financial compensation. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Skill Development: Does the internship provide industry-relevant skills that will boost your employability?

  • Alignment with Goals: Do the responsibilities align with your career objectives?

  • Resume Value: Will the company’s name or the position enhance your CV?

~ Takeaway: Just like a farmer who plants seeds and waits patiently for future harvest, an internship that offers valuable learning experiences can lead to great rewards in the future, even if the stipend is low or nonexistent.

4. Long-Term Gains Outweigh Short-Term Pay:

View your first internship as a stepping stone rather than an endpoint. The knowledge and experience you gain will open doors to better opportunities down the line.

  • Your first internship helps you build credibility in the professional world.

  • The skills and references you acquire now can lead to higher-paying and more satisfying roles in the future.

  • Concentrate on laying a foundation that helps you stand out in a competitive job market.

~ Takeaway: The true value of an internship lies in the experience and skills you gain, not merely in the stipend.

The true value of an internship may not be obvious at first, but it becomes clearer as you advance in your career. Take Ratan Tata, for instance; in his early days, he worked quietly on the shop floor to grasp the challenges of manufacturing. This experience significantly influenced his leadership style and decision-making skills. Internships teach you resilience in challenging situations and the essential skill of effective communication, forming a solid foundation for future success. I read this in Stephen Covey’s book- "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," taking proactive steps—like accepting an unpaid internship to acquire vital skills—can empower you to shape your future.

Approach your internship like a farmer tending to a crop. Dedicate your time and energy thoughtfully, develop your skills, and foster relationships. The rewards of opportunities and personal growth you will gain later will make all your efforts worthwhile.

In my upcoming article, I’ll provide practical tips to help you land on an internship. Stay tuned!
