Unlocking the Water–Waste–Energy Nexus: A Circular Economy Blueprint for Municipalities and Business Sustainability

The transformative potential of the water-waste-energy nexus in the age of climate resilience, infrastructure strain, and economic recovery is the key to sustainable service delivery and meeting ESG goals.

Municipalities and businesses must transition toward circular economy models by leveraging the water–waste–energy nexus. In this context, a circular economy is an economic system that aims to eliminate waste and continually use resources. It's like a recycling loop where the design of products is such that they can be reused, repaired, or recycled, and waste generation and energy use are at a minimum. This approach regenerates resources, cuts emissions, and reduces reliance on overburdened infrastructure.

What is the Water–Waste–Energy Nexus?

This nexus reflects the interconnected relationship between water (especially wastewater), solid waste, and energy systems:

  • Wastewater treatment plants can generate energy and recover nutrients.

  • When co-digested with sludge, municipal organic waste can produce biogas, heat, electricity, and biofertilizers.

  • Reclaimed water can reduce reliance on potable sources and support industry or agriculture.

  • Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and waste-to-energy technologies (WtE) manage residuals and generate power.

When designed and managed as a system, these sectors offer greater sustainability, financial viability, and environmental impact than when treated in isolation.
