A 2021 NESAWG Mutual Aid Award recipient, Tarshie embodies leadership rooted in justice, equity, and community care, inspiring a new generation of environmental stewards across Rhode Island.
Tarun Bothra-
Tarun Bothra , co-founder of Saathi , is redefining menstrual health and environmental sustainability through innovation and equity.
Saathi’s biodegradable sanitary pads crafted from banana and bamboo fiber are more than a product: they are a movement. By providing affordable, safe hygiene solutions to women in underserved communities, the company empowers those most impacted by menstrual inequity while creating additional income for local farmers. Their all-women manufacturing team not only drives economic independence but also fosters community pride.
Every pad avoids plastic waste, reduces CO₂ emissions, and prevents landfill overflow—proving that health, dignity, and the environment are deeply connected. Wanjiku "Wawa" Gatheru-
Wawa Gatheru is a bold, visionary leader driving climate justice rooted in racial equity, intergenerational empowerment, and systemic change.
Her journey began in Connecticut, where she led the state’s first Youth Climate Lobby Day and founded UCAFE at the University of Connecticut to combat food insecurity—bridging grassroots action with lasting policy change. Her influence soon reached the national stage, earning recognition in U.S. Senator Chris Murphy’s book The Hidden Cost of College.
As founder and executive director of Black Girl Environmentalist (BGE), Wawa has built a national platform creating leadership pipelines for Black girls, women, and gender-expansive youth in the environmental sector. Programs like the Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship ensure that historically excluded voices are at the center of climate solutions.
From speaking at the United Nations to serving on the boards of Earthjustice and Greenpeace USA, and appearing on MSNBC to challenge dominant narratives, Wawa’s work embodies justice-driven leadership. She remains deeply connected to the communities that shaped her, proving that environmental progress is strongest when it is equitable, inclusive, and community-led.
Gail Latimore-
Gail Latimore has dedicated more than 25 years to advancing equitable, sustainable communities through visionary nonprofit leadership. As Executive Director of the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation (CSNDC) since 1998, Gail has guided the organization through exponential growth—expanding services, building partnerships, and ensuring that development meets the needs of residents first.
Under her leadership, CSNDC has created over 200 units of affordable housing, laying the foundation for long-term stability, equity, and environmental responsibility in Boston’s Codman Square. Her work integrates responsible urban planning with community health and climate resilience, ensuring that housing is not just affordable, but sustainable.
Gail has been at the forefront of community-led transformation for decades. As a founding board member of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative and an active voice on numerous boards—from the National NeighborWorks Association to the Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporations—her influence extends far beyond her own neighborhood.

Nakia Navarro-
Nakia Navarro , founder of Building Audacity Inc , is transforming the future of food systems by creating STEM-focused, agriculture-based pathways for Black youth and other youth of color. Since 2019, her nonprofit has been working to dismantle systemic barriers in food access and empower communities through food justice and food sovereignty.
Through Building Audacity’s Food Justice programming, youth and families gain more than fresh, locally grown produce—they gain control over how food is produced, distributed, and consumed. The organization distributes fresh food from New England farms, offers nutrition education on preparing these foods, and provides a groundbreaking AgTech pathway featuring a hydroponic center, makerspace, and paid-to-learn opportunities in agricultural technology.
Nakia’s work bridges equity, innovation, and sustainability, ensuring that historically excluded communities are not only included in but are leaders of the food systems of tomorrow.
