We Walk, They Talk – 13 – Confidence is good. Certainty is dangerous.

We Walk, They Talk – 13 – Confidence is good. Certainty is dangerous.

Most of us were taught to value intelligence and knowledge. But what if the real edge isn’t what you know—it’s how quickly you’re willing to unlearn?

This isn’t about being indecisive. It’s about building the kind of thinking that adapts instead of defends - adding another essential layer to something we all need more of these days: critical thinking.

Think Again is a mindset book that avoids the fluff. It’s a mix of psychology, case studies, and real-world examples - from NASA to classrooms to polarizing debates - and it offers practical tools for becoming more mentally flexible.

Being smart isn’t about having the right answers. It’s about asking better questions - and being willing to update your beliefs when the data (or the world) changes.

This week’s pick: Think Again by Adam Grant

The Book’s Big Idea:

The faster the world changes, the more dangerous certainty becomes. Success isn’t about sticking to your plan — it’s about being open to rethinking it when the facts change.

We can all get better at asking truly curious questions that don't have the hidden agenda of fixing, saving, advising, convincing, or correcting... - Kate Murphy

What I Found the Most Insightful and Helpful:

Think like a scientist. Don’t treat your ideas as truths — treat them as hypotheses. I’ve started applying this by testing assumptions in client work and conversations before locking anything in. A/B test. Spend more time ideating. Lock in later.

Separate your identity from your ideas. One of the hardest lessons. I’ve been reminding myself: don't get attached to your idea, just because I created something doesn’t mean I have to defend it. Started asking “what’s missing?” instead of “is it good?”. This changes a projects feedback dynamic completely.

The "smarter" you are, the more vulnerable you are to bias. Intelligence can become armour. Try to build in space to pause before defending an idea - More questions, less certainty.

Lead with curiosity, not correction. Whether it's working with clients or collaborating on a project, I’ve been practicing replacing debate with discovery. Instead of trying to “win,” I ask: what are they seeing that I’m not?

If you’re an Entrepreneur…

You need to pivot fast, often, and with clarity. This book reminds you that stubbornness kills innovation — and that unlearning bad assumptions is just as important as having bold ideas. Ask yourself: what business belief have you outgrown?

If you’re a Creative…

Growth isn’t just about learning new skills - it’s about shedding old thinking. This book gives you the tools to challenge your own defaults, take feedback without flinching, and come back stronger with every project. Creativity thrives when ego isn’t in the room.
