Welcome to the Week... Say it Like Phil!

This week, I had the chance to meet Phil Esposito, NHL legend and Hall of Famer from the Boston Bruins , founder of the Tampa Bay Lightning , and the raw, unapologetically honest voice that brings Lightning games to life alongside Dave Mishkin . But what struck me most wasn’t his résumé. It was his presence. His truth-telling. His care.

Phil tells it like it is. Always has. Whether he’s in the broadcast booth or reflecting on his days as a Hall of Fame player, he doesn’t sugarcoat. He doesn’t hedge. And yet, you can feel the heart behind the words. It’s not about tearing people down it’s about lifting the standard, because he cares that much.

It reminded me of Kim Scott 's book Radical Candor. In it, she defines four modes of communication:

  • "Manipulative Insincerity: Saying what people want to hear for personal gain
  • Obnoxious Aggression: Harsh truth with no heart
  • Ruinous Empathy: Caring, but withholding the truth
  • Radical Candor: Care personally. Challenge directly."

Phil lives in Radical Candor® . And as a leader, founder, and broadcaster, he’s proof that clarity plus care is a winning combination.

At Fitlife Foods , this shows up in how we run toward our issues and elevate our people. EOS Worldwide teaches us that a healthy organization confronts challenges head-on. We don’t hide from hard conversations. We solve them. Not with ego or fear, but with honesty and intention.

We also make sure we’ve got the right people in the right seats. And being radically candid is how we honor them. Because when you really believe in someone, you don’t hold back truth, you give it to them with context, respect, and a path forward.

Phil Esposito doesn’t pretend. He’s not here to perform. He’s here to win, and to help others win, too.

So, this week, ask yourself:

  • Where am I avoiding honesty because I don’t want to upset someone?
  • Where am I being honest without showing care?
  • Who on my team needs to hear the truth—in a way that lifts them, not limits them?

Let’s say it like Phil: clear, direct, and from the heart. Because the people and the issues deserve it.
