What if 120 minutes of surfing could accelerate months of therapy?
After years of facilitating group therapy sessions, I noticed something remarkable: participants who had just finished surfing seemed to go deeper, faster, and with more vulnerability than those in traditional clinical settings.
What typically took weeks to achieve in rehabilitation centres was happening in days.
This observation led me to investigate the connection between flow states and therapeutic breakthroughs through formal research at the University of Worcester.
The Flow-Therapy Connection
Flow – that optimal state where you're completely absorbed in an activity, losing track of time and ego – isn't just about peak performance. My research revealed four key findings about how flow states enhance group therapy:
1. Flow is therapeutic in itself Participants reported significant reductions in intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and depression symptoms. As one participant shared: "When I'm in flow, my head is clear of intrusive thoughts... everything else disappears."
2. Post-flow openness After experiencing flow through surfing, participants became more willing to be vulnerable and authentic in group settings. The neurochemical cocktail of oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins naturally creates psychological safety.
3. Accelerated therapeutic process Most striking was the speed of progress. One participant noted: "What we covered in a week, I don't think I've covered in a year of one-to-one therapy." The combination of shared flow experience and subsequent group work created unprecedented therapeutic momentum.
4. The power of physical exhaustion The gentle fatigue from physical activity lowered psychological barriers. Participants arrived at therapy sessions naturally relaxed, with their "walls down" – creating space for deeper work.
The Science Behind the Magic
Flow states trigger a predictable neurochemical cascade:
This final recovery phase is crucial for therapy. Oxytocin increases trust and willingness to share emotions – exactly what's needed for vulnerable group work. Meanwhile, serotonin enhances mood and motivation for psychological healing.
Real-World Impact
At Resurface, we've measured remarkable outcomes combining surf therapy with group work:
But the qualitative findings matter just as much. Participants consistently report feeling more connected, more willing to engage authentically, and experiencing breakthroughs that felt impossible in traditional settings.
The Future of Therapeutic Innovation
This research points to exciting possibilities for mental health treatment. While surfing was our flow trigger, the principles could apply to any flow-inducing activity – rock climbing, music, art, even certain types of collaborative work.
The implications extend beyond clinical practice. In corporate wellness, team building, and leadership development, understanding how flow states enhance psychological safety and authentic connection could revolutionise how we approach human development.
Moving Forward
We need more research into flow-enhanced therapeutic modalities. The mental health crisis demands innovation, and flow science offers a evidence-based pathway to more effective, efficient healing.
Traditional approaches have plateaued. It's time to embrace what neuroscience tells us about optimal states of consciousness and their therapeutic potential.
What's been your experience with flow states – either personally or in your professional practice? Have you noticed how physical activities or peak experiences affect your openness to deeper conversations or personal growth?
I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. Let's explore how we might revolutionise therapeutic practice together.

3moHi Josh, is it possible to access the full research report or journal if it has been published? I'm currently researching the impact of community-based MHPSS (including surf projects) in comparison to formal MHPSS, and I would love to see more data if available.

3moThis is really fascinating thanks for sharing Josh. When I do my EMDR intensives I leave a day in between processing for trauma-informed movement, journalling etc. I’m thinking I could spend more time about exploring flow states with my clients and support them with this during those middle days too.
