What the 2025 Gartner Hype Cycle Tells Us About Identity & Risk
Identity systems are no longer merely gatekeepers; they are now the new frontline in cybersecurity, according to the 2025 @Gartner Hype Cycle for Digital Identity. Attackers are aware of this.
At TechBridge, we noticed one trend among the more than thirty innovations plotted on this year's curve: Identity Threat Detection and Response (ITDR).
ITDR may seem unstable given its position deep within the Trough of Disillusionment. Take a closer look, though, as Gartner rates its benefits as "High," observes that it has a market penetration of more than 50%, and characterizes it as mission-critical for protecting digital infrastructure.
That's validation, not disillusionment.
Why ITDR Isn’t Just a Trend
IAM was once thought of as a tool for managing users and roles and a compliance checkbox. It is currently one of the attack surfaces that is most commonly exploited.
The 2025 Data Breach Report from Gartner and Verizon states that the most common reasons for breaches these days are admin access abuse and credential misuse. This indicates that the identity stack as a whole, including your admin accounts, token generators, and IAM platform, is the direct target.
Additionally, there is no containment when your identity infrastructure is compromised. In addition to forging trusted credentials and moving laterally across systems, attackers can operate covertly for weeks before being discovered.
At this point, ITDR becomes crucial. It is a fundamental capability rather than an add-on.
Beyond Prevention: The Role ITDR Must Play
"There is no such thing as perfect prevention," as we have all heard. Gartner confirms this. Modern attackers manage to get in despite MFA, privileged access controls, and robust entitlement governance.
What then bridges the gap?
IAM is given a security mindset by ITDR. It continuously checks your identity layer for anomalous activity, such as forged tokens, unexpected privilege escalations, or changes in admin configurations, and takes action before the harm is done.
Consider it the link between your SOC and IAM, enabling you to identify, react, and recover more quickly than your adversary can change course.
Why Most Organizations Struggle with ITDR
The idea is strong. Implementation, however, is a different matter.
The majority of IAM tools were never intended for detection. By their very nature, they are preventive. In the meantime, most security teams don't have a thorough understanding of identity telemetry. Identity alerts are overlooked or misunderstood as a result, creating a fragmented view.
ITDR isn't a single product, as Gartner astutely notes. It is an ecosystem that necessitates close coordination between IAM and security teams, governance, hygiene, and detection tools.
That's challenging. However, it is essential.
Our Take at TechBridge
We at TechBridge think ITDR is more than just a catchphrase. It serves as the operating system for contemporary cybersecurity.
This very idea served as the foundation for our CyberSIO platform, which helps security teams not only keep an eye on threats but also coordinate identity signals in real time, react automatically, and minimize the surface area for credential-based attacks.
"Business-as-usual" identity practices are no longer sufficient, according to Gartner. And the same is true for governments, businesses, and vital infrastructure.
Your risk strategy must become deeply integrated with the identity layer, making it intelligent and responsive. ITDR excels in this situation.
Last Words
You will miss the bigger picture if you read the Hype Cycle as a checklist. Gartner is indicating a change from identity resilience to access control. from merely preventing to continuously detecting and responding.
We at TechBridge aren't merely observing this change.
We're preparing for it.
Let's discuss if ITDR is on your FY26 roadmap. Because the future of cybersecurity begins at the end of your identity infrastructure.
