What Football Analytics Can Teach Successful Companies

When organisations fail it comes natural to ask tough questions like: Why did we fail? And how can we get things right? But when organisations succeed they often fail to ask tough questions. Instead, they cruise on expecting results to continue automatically.

Well put Rasmus Ankersen I totally agree with the idea that all industries should consider the amount of caos involved in their ecosystem to produce a consistent positive result. Also I would add that our industry (football) is still stuck in using socially accepted metrics to judge performance and the decision made from them are extremely wasteful. Lots to change and educate. 👍

What kind of metrics would a gambler look for in a company, a part from customer satisfaction?

I do buy in to the use of analytics and it should be the first derivative of performance. Expected value does explain Newcastle. As a mathematics graduate I get it - but over the last few years I have stated to get into the 2nd derivative of performance - which is the EQ and personality of players, how they fit together, how they understand each other as a team. It’s when you start to think about the inter-relationship psychology that you start to understand performance on a game by game basis. Data would probably struggle to pick the turnaround of Man U under Solksjaer, for example. We are working to do do just that. We at HumanTelligence are doing it the opposite way round. We are taking our success with building high EQ related teams that perform very successfully in business and applying it to the sports world. Data + EQ brings a new level of understanding.
