"Is what I am doing right now serving the person I want to become?"

"Is what I am doing right now serving the person I want to become?"

I forgot I wrote this. Clearing out my desk this week ahead of a house move, I found a card tucked in an old folder. On it, in my own handwriting:

“Is what I’m doing right now serving the person I want to become?”

I must’ve written it two years ago, when I was in the messy, exciting, slightly terrifying early stages of starting my coaching business.

At the time, I was letting go of the identity I’d carried for three decades - the one tied to job titles, team size, pace, pressure, and being ‘on’ all the time. I was figuring out how to build something that felt more true to the person I was becoming. Something that reflected the way I wanted to work, and the way I wanted to live.

That question helped me stay focused. Not just on what I was doing, but who I was becoming.

And what I enjoyed most about finding the card again this week, was realising that I still needed it.

Because even now, even with more clarity, more confidence, more connection to my work, it’s easy to default to old patterns. Old definitions of success and old habits that once worked, but no longer serve.

We don’t always notice when we’ve outgrown something, and we rarely pause to ask if the version of ourselves we’re embodying today is actually aligned with the version we’re growing into.

So I’m sharing this for anyone who might be:

  • Stuck in busy mode but not sure it’s taking you anywhere
  • In a role or rhythm that no longer fits, but feels hard to let go of
  • Building something new, and wondering if you’re still being shaped by who you used to be

Here’s what this question helps me do:

  • Interrupt autopilot
  • Notice where my energy is actually going
  • Reconnect with what 'future me' might thank me for
  • Let go of strategies that no longer fit, even if they once worked
  • Choose growth over comfort, on purpose

The card’s going back on my desk when we move. Somewhere I can see it every day. Not as pressure, but as a gentle nudge to keep becoming.

Is what you’re doing now serving the person you want to become?

👉 I wrote some more about this in my blog this week.

“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.” Another James Clear concept I love. Here’s to recognising it’s a democratic process - we don’t need 100% of the votes, just a majority! Thanks
