What is "it"?

What is "it"?

This month is completion of my 30th years in the field of Information Technology, commonly referred to as "IT". "IT" has been a phenomenal progress and vigorous learning for me. Here is some of my learning during last 30 years!:

  1. CONSTANT. Change is a "constant" like your new mobile device, I would be obsolete in 3 months if I don't keep up with "constant" learning in "it".
  2. VARIABLE. Our situations are "variable", they will change without notice. Never plan to settle at a station, keep moving. e.g. Market, Life.
  3. SUB-ROUTINE. Methodologies are like a "sub-routine", they have limited scope for a defined circumstances. Do you recall calling same "sub-routine" for every task? Similarly, one methodology is not suitable for every situation.
  4. FUNCTION. or sometime called "procedures" are the good habits or soft skills you develop over a period of time, to be reused over and over again. Keep building repository of your soft skills.
  5. LOGIC. The art of rationalization (yes art and not science) is the evolution of "logic" (i.e. once you get passed the science part). You will only reach this "level" after mediating "it" for 3 decades.
  6. CONDITIONAL. Pairing technology to your project is like "if-then-else" condition. Do not assume uniformity. Nature is not uniform, and remember basic lesson: one size does not fit all.
  7. LOOP. When you get caught in a "loop" of delivering 3 projects without learning a new thing. Always have a "exit when x > 3" to exit out of "loop". Don't get stuck in a routine. Your learning will stop in a routine.
  8. DATA. The vast ocean of learning, transformed into knowledge of "data". Sharing "it" only increases the knowledge. Give back to "it" what you have learned.
  9. PROGRAM. A piece of code that accounts for all-of-the-above, provided you had documented "it" before you code it, then only it's declared as a "program". Everything else is called "technology-debt".
  10. BUG. In "it", do not plan to build a universe, you will run out of time. "it" is very unforgiving for time. "Debug" the plan.
  11. STATE-OF-ART. Its a lie. There is no end to brilliance. I learned it from my master. The new shinny object will loose its gloss to another brighter star. You will figure it out in 30 years. Appreciate the technology and people who worked hard to put it together. Don't be married to it. There is so much more to explore.
  12. IPO-01. Input-Process-Output using 0 and 1. There is nothing more to "it". Don't be taken by flattering jargon or sophisticated presentation. Its all about input process and output.

I want to thank all those who have contributed to my learning, and for supporting and appreciating my work. And those who have disagreed, critic, presented another perspective, thank you. You have provided me with a view into another dimension, a dimension I didn't live. It's priceless.

Thanks everyone.
