When AI Meets Dysfunction
Intentions Won’t Deliver
We all hear the grand promises that AI will drive efficiency, eliminate bias and unlock new ideas. They sound important, but they remain hollow unless your organisation has the right foundations in place. Too often, teams rush to pilot machine-learning models without fixing the everyday frictions that block progress.
Imagine a company where data is scattered across spreadsheets and legacy databases. Different teams own pieces of the picture, yet nobody owns the whole. In that environment, introducing AI only compounds confusion. The model learns from incomplete records, draws faulty conclusions and produces unreliable outputs. Rather than becoming smarter, the organisation grows more opaque.
The same holds true for processes. If roles and responsibilities overlap and approvals require endless email chains, AI will only speed up a flawed workflow. It may automate steps, but it cannot resolve who should take the final call. Instead of streamlining operations, it simply automates the existing bottlenecks—faster and at scale.
Governance is another critical piece. Without clear accountability and guardrails, advanced analytics can amplify bias instead of removing it. An AI tool trained on historical hiring data may perpetuate past inequities unless you first audit for imbalance. Models reflect the world they learn from. If that world is flawed, the outcomes will be too.
This isn’t to say AI has no place. When your data pipelines are robust and your processes are well-defined, machine learning can accelerate discovery and free your people from repetitive tasks. But those benefits only materialise after you’ve invested in data quality, process clarity and sound metrics.
Addressing these fundamentals demands time and discipline. It means establishing a single source of truth for your data and defining end-to-end workflows that leave no ambiguity about who does what, when. It means setting governance policies that cover ethics, privacy and compliance, and assigning clear ownership for model performance and ongoing monitoring.
Only when those building blocks are in place should you add AI to the mix. At that point, it becomes a powerful amplifier of good: delivering insights faster, reducing manual errors and helping you make better decisions. Until then, it acts more like a pressure test—highlighting weaknesses, revealing misalignment and exposing risks.
So before you greenlight your next AI initiative, pause and conduct a readiness review. Map your data landscape and plug the gaps. Document your processes and eliminate hand-offs that add no value. Define success metrics that align with business outcomes, not theoretical benchmarks. Then ask: are we reinforcing solid ground or automating our weaknesses?
AI doesn’t reward aspiration alone. It rewards preparation, discipline and integrity. It doesn’t care about the AI Centre of Excellence you announce on stage. It cares about the rigour of your data practices and the clarity of your decision-making. If you want AI to transform your business, start by proving that your house is in order. Only then can you unlock the true potential of intelligent automation.

1moGreat insights. I'll add that AI can help remove biases formed in the hiring process if trained on fair data. As people, we are focused on relationships and build our networks based on this, which can have many biases. Hence cleaning in house before adoption is critical.
