When longevity turns metaphysical

When longevity turns metaphysical

Most people step back from a company because it’s not working. Bryan Johnson has stepped back because it is – or at least because it has taken on a life of its own. Blueprint, once his tightly-controlled longevity protocol, has become a brand with products, customers and (one assumes) margin targets. Johnson, however, seems more interested in ideas than operations – and has now repositioned himself not as CEO, but as philosophical figurehead of Don’t Die, his newly-declared ideology and self-described “fastest-growing religion in the world”.

Whether you find that framing visionary or vaguely cultish probably depends on your tolerance for plasma swaps and metaphysical mission statements. But the shift raises a real question for the field: what happens when longevity leaves the lab and enters the realm of belief? Johnson may have impeccable biomarkers, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us can follow – nor should we be expected to. There’s a risk that the pursuit of healthspan becomes tangled in spectacle; that performative optimization eclipses the quiet, unremarkable work of prevention.

Bryan Johnson is vegan so he is vastly healthier than 98% humans consuming serial killing cancerogenic slaughterhouse junk. I respect people with Emotional Intelligence (empathy).

Only "vaguely" cultish? As P.T. Barnum famously said, "There's a sucker born every minute". I have grave concern for those who would choose to follow a leader built more on show than on substance.

Somewhere between the allure of immortality and the quiet daily choices that shape our health, there’s a tension most of us feel but rarely name. I see the seduction of a “new religion," especially in a world hungry for certainty... but I’m also cautious of anything that asks us to outsource our self-trust to another ideology, however charismatic. The most meaningful forms of longevity, in my view, aren’t measured in numbers or protocols but in the texture of everyday presence... how we relate to ourselves, to our communities, and to our sense of meaning. History is full of prophets who built movements on promise; very few left people truly equipped to think, choose, and live with agency. Curious... do you think the next evolution of longevity will empower individuals, or simply create new tribes to belong to?
