Where should I look for a job?

Where should I look for a job?

Solution: Job Search Databases / Job Boards

Whenever entering the market for a new role, people often revert to methods they are comfortable with such as LinkedIn, their favourite recruiters or directly on company websites. These are all valid options to be considered but today we're highlighting the benefits of using traditional online job search databases (job boards).

Why job boards? Think of them as your one-stop shop for a diverse range of opportunities. Companies advertise directly on these platforms, and most recruitment agencies (like me at Electus) use them to showcase our clients' roles. Plus, the type of jobs you find here often differ from those on LinkedIn, simply because the advertising styles and costs are different.

Here's the best part: job boards make the process streamlined. You can quickly scan job descriptions, apply directly using your profile and CV, and feel empowered to take charge of your job search. It might take a bit more effort than targeting specific companies or relying solely on recruiters, but the sheer volume of options lets you tailor your search to your exact needs. Filter by location, salary, job title, and even keywords to curate a job board experience that's just right for you.

Ready to give it a go? Here's your rough guide:

  1. Make a choice: CV Library, Jobsite / Total Jobs, Monster, and Reed are all solid contenders for Project Management roles. But don't be afraid to explore! Test out their filters and keywords, see which platform feels most intuitive, and even check out niche sites like Security Cleared Jobs if your expertise lies in a specific area.

  2. Prepare your profile: Make sure your CV is polished and your profile is loaded with all the info you want recruiters and hiring managers to see. Do you prefer email inquiries, phone calls, or a mix of both? Don't forget to set your preferences so you only hear through channels that fit your style.

  3. Search: Use those filters and keywords to target your ideal jobs. Location, salary, job title, industry are all standard. Additionally, keywords allows you to highlight specific types of projects, software used etc.

  4. Stay alert: Save your searches and set up notifications. This way, you'll be the first to know when a new role matching your criteria pops up.

Job boards might seem like an old-school tool in the age of LinkedIn, but they're still a powerful weapon in your job search. They offer a diverse range of opportunities, simplify the application process, and allow you to personally drive the search.

At Electus, we utilise most of the major job boards (plus LinkedIn and some specialist sites!) to help you land your ideal P3M role across engineering, defence, nuclear, security, government or management consultancy.
