Be The White Sqirrel
The other day, while waiting to pick up my son from school, I found myself absentmindedly scrolling through my phone — the way you do when you have a few extra minutes and nowhere urgent to be. While doing so, I caught a flash of white moving across the grass in front of me and looked up. At first, I thought it must be a trick of the light. But, after taking a closer look around, it came into view — a completely white squirrel, darting between the trees.
I got out of the car to get a closer look and yes, to get a photo because (1) how often do you see a white squirrel? and (2) I knew there had to be a good blog post here.🙂
When my son finally arrived at the car, I excitedly told him about my sighting. He then casually replied, “Oh yeah, that’s Al. Everyone at school knows about him.”
Apparently, Al’s kind of a big deal. Not because he tried to be, but because he simply couldn’t blend in — and didn’t need to.
There’s something powerful about the idea of Al, the white squirrel - something that goes beyond the cute factor or the photo opportunity. It’s a reminder that what makes us different is often what makes us unforgettable.
So, today, I encourage you to be the white squirrel. Here's why:
1. No One Does You Better Than You. Trying to fit in only dilutes your strengths. Your quirks, passions, and ways of thinking are your superpowers. When you show up fully as yourself, you bring something into the world no one else can replicate.
2. Embracing Yourself Builds Confidence. Confidence isn’t pretending to be perfect — it’s being comfortable with who you are. The more you lean into your unique traits, the less you seek external validation — and the more naturally others are drawn to you.
3. We Remember What Stands Out When you stand out, you don't just get noticed — you become memorable. Al didn’t just catch my eye — he became part of the school’s story. In business and life, the ones bold enough to be different are the ones people remember.
4. Authenticity Attracts the Right People When you show who you really are, you don't just attract attention — you attract real connections. When you hide your true self, you risk building connections with people who were never really meant for you.
5. Authenticity Inspires Authenticity Sometimes just being yourself gives other people permission to be themselves too. Maybe someone’s been waiting to see someone like you — someone unafraid to stand out — before stepping more fully into their own uniqueness.
Al the White Squirrel probably doesn't know he's famous. He’s just living his life — doing squirrel things, being who he was meant to be. And that's the real magic. Be the white squirrel because the world needs what only you can bring.
As always, if this message resonates with you, feel free to share it with someone who might benefit from these insights. I’d love to hear your thoughts here.
