Why EDR Is A Must for Protecting MSP Clients and How Acronis Makes It Easy

This week, we announced the global availability of Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) for Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud. Released as Advanced Security + EDR advanced pack, the new technology compliments backup and cybersecurity by providing visibility into what actually happens on an endpoint (such as computer, laptop, etc.) when it’s compromised. Having this information sysadmins are able to patch security holes and block malicious activity. It’s a must in today’s world.

Now, when you release a new product into a saturated yet fragmented market, one should ask a very simple question: why? What does Acronis bring to the market that is not already available? Why would anyone consider deploying or switching to Acronis EDR?

The first answer is simplicity and ease of management. We saw an opportunity in making EDR easy for service providers – easy to install (just toggle the switch!), easy to understand, and easy to manage.

Michael Suby, Research Vice President of Security and Trust at IDC, confirmed that an EDR solution is most effective when it’s easy:

“With the proliferation of endpoints and increasing frequency of cyber threats, EDR has become a mission-critical tool in incident response and the fight for data protection. But solutions that are difficult to deploy and maintain are an obstacle. The best solutions deliver the advanced security of EDR and meet the needs of the IT professionals who use it. That means easy deployments and rapid detection, response, and recovery with AI and automation on board.”

We worked with hundreds of MSPs during the Early Access Program (EAP) stage, understanding their pain points and ensuring that we stay true to the original goal of keeping the technology simple. Early signs confirm that we have achieved that. Most of the EAP participants now use our new EDR solution in live mission-critical environments, and the adoption by other MSPs is accelerating.

The second answer to the “why” question above is that EDR has become an utter necessity. There are literally billions of endpoint devices, but let’s take one example. 67% of all internet users access the internet through a laptop — that’s 3.4 billion laptops. I am using one now for this article. You are accessing the content from another endpoint, and odds-are it’s a laptop or desktop computer. There is a lot of hardware and network between us, but you and I are connected at these endpoints.

Protecting laptops and the data on them used to be as simple as installing antivirus software and running regular backups. But, as fast as the number of users and endpoints has grown, the number of cyberthreats has increased even faster. The business of cybercrime is expected to reach more than $10 trillion annually by 2025. This means that if cybercrime were a country, it would have the third-largest GDP. And for cybercriminals, the endpoint is target #1.

Some common cyberattacks at the endpoint include social engineering, phishing, and compromised passwords. These tactics can cause significant damage without even catching malware. Of course, it is important to have backups to protect your data and anti-malware to prevent ransomware attacks. Now, you also have EDR to detect, block, and investigate other potential threats.

The third answer is that EDR is a logical extension of Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud platform. Reducing complexity and making data security and cyber protection accessible to more MSPs and the clients they serve is a part of our mission at Acronis. We have developed a world-class platform for MSPs where all different services such as backup, malware protection, patch management, EDR, remote access, and many more, are delivered through a single agent. EDR is our latest project, and there’s more to come.

Simply put, there is no better or easier way for MSPs to expand their security service offerings, improve client protection, maximize the productivity of their technical teams and deliver real value than by deploying Advanced Security + EDR on Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud. I invite you to have a look for yourself.
